Maybe We Need to Look At This Differently

I'm realizing more and more, though, that at the end of the day stats don't translate to wins on the field. The Griz down right dominated some teams statistically this year and still came out on the wrong end in the W-L column. They also saw some major improvements in both offensive and defensive stats in Stitt's second year compared to his first, yet at the end of the day we were all twiddling our thumbs at Thanksgiving.

I used to be a stats freak, and still am a little, but am realizing they dont really matter much, whether improved or declined from year to year. Just win baby....that's the only stat that matters obviously. I don't care if it's with a defense winning every game 14-10 or with an offense winning 45-42...just win.

Sigh........... You are probably right. It just seems like improvement in some areas like striving not to be last in the conference in PAT conversions might make small differences.

I totally hear what you're saying. I used to follow and track stats freakishly until it didn't seem to make differences. We saw marked improvements in TOP, red zone scoring, total offense, etc this year over last yet still couldn't get Ws. It's when I decided to stop paying so much attention to just the stats is all. It's still interesting stuff and they can show trends, just doesn't always amount to Ws

That is such a remarkably apt self-description, offered with no trace of self-embarrassment or irony, it perhaps summarizes fully the seven or eight regular posters who do what you do repeatedly, and then blame somebody else for it. You "get tired" of reading some things. Believe me, for those of use tired of your constant smarmy trolling, it is even more tiresome because so much of it is content free; just cascading attempts to either prove how clever you think you are, or to incite yet another insult contest. Indeed, on so many threads, you rarely post to the thread topic. Odd, huh?

Here's yet another one, in case your self-awareness gene needs a boost.

The problem with your theory is tying performance improvements in selected categories to actual wins and losses. Last year (after 2015's performance) we wished for better RZ performance and increased TOP. Unfortunately we improved dramatically in BOTH of those categories (from 8th to 2nd in RZ production and TOP up by over 5 minutes per game) but won FEWER games.

AZ - This certainly can happen if you cherry pick one or two and kind of proves one point that I tried, obviously unsuccessfully, to make, is that it isn't all about wins and losses. Are we seeing improvement, adequate improvement, so one can make some rational decisions on the road forward in the future? I'm working on some statistics and I will layout ten areas of measurable improvement that I feel would go a long way to an improved record. If next year's coaching staff and team meet (arbitrarily) seven of those goals I, maybe not you or others, would be comfortable if the coaching staff were given extensions despite the record. If they aren't met then that would be my trigger for concern.

Well you can pick 10, but all I'm saying is that improvement in certain areas doesn't necessarily translate to improved success on the field. I mean, moving from 8th to 2nd in RZ performance should LOGICALLY translate to more success on the field, wouldn't you think? Unfortunately, the game isn't an algorithm, it's played by human beings--and DIFFERENT human beings each season, at that....

I'm not being critical of your thought processes though because I, too, am kind of a stats guy and believe that the ODDS are that certain improvements should lead to improvements in the W/L record...RZ performance, penalties, YPC, YPP, third down conversion %, turnover ratio, TOP, scoring margin, etc., etc....but I didn't cherry pick the RZ comment. It was discussed at length after the end of the 2015 season....

Do you find it even remotely coincidental that it always seems to be YOU that is under attack? That almost without exception, EVERY thread that gets derailed includes YOU in the discussion? Or do you view yourself in the classic "board police" role, where you've come to save the eGriz day and rid the board of all those evil trolls? You're embody the classic quote..."I'm with the government, and I'm here to help".

Well, at mid-season, I noted the fact that in three games running, we had walloped the competition in "stats," and yet lost the games -- but that didn't mean there was anything "wrong" with the stats.

To the contrary, they were of paramount importance because they showed conclusively that the ability of the players on the field to move the ball and defend was not the problem, not at all. The kids were doing great. The games were being lost elsewhere. The stats allowed us to see that, vividly, and it was important to know that, especially in light of sideline criticisms that the losses were because the kids "weren't fired up." Part of the problem was that our D was not making opposing teams work very hard for their "stats." And that was the alternative interesting take-away from the stats of the opposing teams. We did not make them work hard for their points. We worked like hell for ours and found no reward in the end zones.

How many more yards did we need in order to know that "yards" weren't our problem? Because of that, the "stats" were perhaps of even greater importance this last season than ever, because the disparity between those stats and the game results was as large as I have ever seen over several games.

There's no doubt I aggravate a select few people by holding them accountable for stupid remarks. On egriz, it could be its own sport.

But, note the number of threads where I have been commenting on a generic sport observation, and one of oh six, maybe seven of the same people show up just to insert a personal insult. It's always the same small group, gratuitously inserting themselves into a thread for the sole purpose of derailing it and name-calling.

And as often as not, I'll signal that it wasn't my call by stating "on cue" or "well, that's off topic. I am sure Payton will be right on it." Well, even short comments like that seems to "feed the trolls."

And then that's followed by a few more personal insults, and yep, since Payton has different sets of rules, I'll respond in kind. Yes, there is a Troll Brigade, and as other posters have often noted, they have pretty much driven off egrizzers who like to actually talk real football, instead of entertaining themselves with fantasy football and insulting anyone they disagree with. I don't play that game, and they hate it. Their vast and pretentious knowledge of football and the Griz is at risk.

You're a good example. I noted in a passing remark last year that Stitt was a "$300,000 coach." Cripes, I might as well have claimed he'd robbed a bank and shot three people. The vitriol unloaded. You were a ringleader in that, called me names up one side and down the other, claimed your own high financial credentials, etc. Seriously? Over a passing reference to his salary?

It isn't just that there are people here far too tightly wound for their own good, they are too tightly wound by ignorance and stupidity. Woe be to anyone that stumbles across these loudmouths by offering a passing remark about the coach's salary. YOU WILL PAY FOR SUCH HERESY, because only on egriz do people get wound up about shit like that, and it quickly devolved into insults and name-calling.

End of the day? I was exactly right about his salary range. He earned more. You've been resentful ever since, and as with this thread, now take every opportunity to further derail a thread if it gives you more opportunity for pay-back over "coach's salary." I've never trolled your comments in like fashion, nor entertained any reason why I should when I read a post of yours.

Naturally, you gladly opt for more name-calling and personal attacks in the name of protesting name-calling and personal attacks. You lack an appreciation for good irony.

A) I haven't commented on a post you've made in months, let alone trolled...in fact, I regularly and routinely skip your posts altogether, much like many other posters here....so, I hardly "take every opportunity" as you erroneously point out. But I find it comical that you think otherwise.
B) This latest manifesto is rich, coming from the one singular guy on this board who gets wound up against EVERY perceived slight...to you there is no such thing as a "passing comment".
C) If you think I still give two shits about a comment made on a football message board 8 months ago it is most definitely YOU that is "resentful" and looking for "payback". I find it hilarious that you apparently have all these slights indexed and cross referenced for ease of research when policing the board and holding people accountable.

You should definitely seek counseling. Stat. Because with the obvious issues you've got, if I ever hear of a shooter in the UM Main Hall tower, I will assume it's you.

it was so "hilarious" that you absorbed nearly eight pages of forum with invective and malice as to how anyone could possibly be so stupid as to believe the coach was a "$300,000" coach.

Only to be proven wrong.

You gave plenty of shits at the time. Couldn't stop bitching and name-calling. It became an obsession. It was stupid. Especially since, at the end of the day, you were wrong and simply made yourself look like an idiot. Your choice. As with this thread, I didn't maliciously attack you, or invite your comments. You blew yourself up.

And here you are again, off-topic, loudly and repeatedly claiming you "don't give two shits" while claiming that it must be somebody else that "needs help."

Oh look kids. Another "Gone With The Wind" thread from 75. Wow, that is sure surprising.

Oh Lord what have I started? I will be through compiling my list of ten measurable areas of improvement sometime this weekend. I will post and then I hope this thread will go away. I doubt if I will ever initiate another thread. My apologies.

Got it backwards, but thanks for intervening just to make an ad hominem attack of the kind you denounce. I didn't feel the need to intervene to attack AZfan, you might notice. He could not resist initiating the usual trolling. Just as you did. And then explode about how little shit he gave, using a magnificent number of harsh words just to show how little he was bothered.

While you guys troll from thread-to-thread gratuitously attacking posters and dragging these threads off topic, do you guys ever realize .... it's you? Every single off topic post on this thread was initiated by one of you ...

A few words come to mind. Victim mentality. High horse. Soap box. Holier than thou. Oh the possibilities are endless. This is entertaining. Please keep going.

Moderators:
Please, as the originator of this thread, discontinue it now. It has no semblance of what I intended it to be, an honest measurable look at things that could be improved next year. No one here, whatever their position, wants to do any research or thoughtful examination of what it might take to make things better. They just want to endlessly bash each other. I'll post my research based on this years statistics on another thread, even though I don't ever want to start something like this again. But I give up on this one. I'm fed up. My fault, I had hopes that better things would come of it but that is obviously impossible .
