Matching up w/ Washington...

Being from the seattle area, I've actively followed U-Dub all season (as well as being here for the griz games)....so here's what i see...

1) Washington has no one over 6'8" on their roster who plays. Every one (minus sub Hakeem Rollins) can shoot the three-ball very effectively. This includes starting "post" Mike Jensen.

2) Everyone is quick. Guards Nate Robinson and Will Conroy play a fast-paced yet controlled backcourt game. Both of them, as well as Brandon Roy, Tre Simmons, Bobby Jones, and any of their replacements can run the offense at any given time. Basically, Rollins is the only player on the team that is not what you'd categorize as a run-and-gun style player (yet he can still run the floor with the best of them).

3) They're a team that is either on or off, as a team. One night they'll lose to an OSU or Stanford and the next they'll overpower Arizona. They are beatable if they're having an off night IMO (having watched nearly every one of their games that was broadcast on tv over here this season - quite a few actually).

4) They have a winning mentality and will obviously be looking to blow us out of the water in a very high-scoring and fast-paced game.

5) Matching up defensively for us will be an adventure. We'll actually need to play D outside the 3 point line and not in a zone. If we go zone (to be able to use seyfert, davis, etc. effectively), we better hope that they're off because they'll keep jacking them up whenever they get a chance.

6) Athletically, Washington is amazing. And i think that this will be where we get our main challenge. To even match up athletically and i'm not talking bball talent or who actually should start, we'd need: Matthews, Farr, Dlouhy, and some clones of those few. Taking away nothing from Martin, Criswell, Davis, etc., we're playing against some guys that at times seem superhuman in their athletic ability (see, Nate Robinson), and I hope that our guys prove me wrong!

7) They're a better team (yup, 1 vs. 16), but I'd love for us to give them a game and make a little excitement happen in round one! We can always hope! I'll be yelling for the griz!

Edit: changed ASU to OSU, realized my typo.

I wouldn't be adverse to starting Mathews over Martin, but I think you fell off your rocker a bit when you said that Criswell and Davis shouldn't start. Criswell is probably the best defender on the team, and who else would guard Nate Robinson? As for Kamaar, he's our best player and we'll need all 40 of his mintues if we're even going to have a shot.

Hey slick, read the post again.

- I mentioned NOTHING about who should start, in fact i gave that disclaimer in bold; i was talking athletic ability and thats all.

Btw, i'm still on my rocker.

Dlouhy and Davis will be fine. Lamar and Virgil are very athletis but not at the level of the the three U-Dub starting guards. Martin should have fun bringing the ball up the floor w/ Nate "The Great" in his grill the whole time. This is Nate Robinson were talkin about, not Casey Durham, he's been guarding guys like Stoudamire all year.

you dont win championships from the 3 point line.....just ask st. joes

i see no dominant big man on this club...if the griz are wise id let them take the 3's, if they miss easy rebound :D

Famous Last Words
The Grizzles just won't have enough firepower to score with top ranked opponents

And that is the greatest thing about this game. Martin is going to be pushed beyond his limit. As a freshman, playing against one of the top 1's in the country, it will give him a glimps of were he is at now...and were he wants to go (and hopefully with hard work will get to) down the road. When you play top competition, it makes you better.

Same goes for everybody on this very young team.

I think we have a chance to scare this team a bit. They were beat soundly by Gonzaga (every year  ), and it's not like GU won a laugher over us this year...

Also....

Biggest stats to watch.... Turnovers, and Rebounds.

I like our chances at winning the boards. We are strong on the boards, and UW has been out rebounded several times this year. Must limit UW to one shot per trip down the court as best as possible.

If we can keep our Turnovers under 15...we will keep it close. We have had a lot of problems with TOs this year....so we should get blown out if we puke up the ball a bunch in this game.

The biggest bonus is playing UW away from Seattle. They are 16-0 there. A more human 11-5 away from Bankone arena...or whatever they call there home court...And the crowd at Boise will pull for UM big time if it stays close.

I also like our coach. He might be one of the top 3 in Boise this weekend!(and maybe better than that...but time will tell) And he had a pretty good record in Boise last year!

Criswell is not the teams best defender. Mathews was proclaimed the teams Defensive MVP by coach Larry K.

Any betters out there. Take Washington, give Montana the 21 points and WIN LOTS OF MONEY!!

Great season Montana, but you have no chance to even come close.

WAKE UP!!!

Bet that's what Stanford thought before we went and beat them on their home court.

I'm not saying the Griz will win, but anything is possible.....
