Orenstein/Rose 101 Errol Carlstrom Playaz 95

Orenstein/Rose opened up a 36-26 lead behind the scoring of Grier and Boone. It was Vince that drove them to the lead early as he scored 13 points in the first ten minutes with a variety of moves to the cup. Grier also gave a nice pass to Rennie Harris for an important three-point play, one of two Rennie completed in the first quarter. Also, Adam scored ten first quarter points, one being a driving, behind the back dribble-step back jumper that was all net. The move caused former Gopher Mitch Ohnstad to trip and fall to all fours while the crowd awed at Boone after he made the move and shot. Two three-pointers each from the Playaz's Keith Salscheider and Matt Martin (the starting point guard for Montana this past year as a sophomore and he's from Spearfish, South Dakota) kept them within ten after a quarter.

Boone put Orenstein up 41-26 with a three-pointer that was two steps behind the NBA three-point line. Just prior to this basket, Adam opened up the second quarter with an aggressive tip-dunk that again greatly excited the people in the stands. He didn't quit either as he nailed another three-pointer, a few driving pull-up jumpers and a driving lay-up. He helped his team build a 55-35 lead at the halftime break as he made eight of his nine field goal attempts and all six of his free throws, good for 24 first half points.

The third quarter was more of the same as Orenstein continued to hold a 78-59 lead at the quarter break. Four field goals from Grier and a pretty behind the back pass to Rennie for a lay-up had Orenstein coasting into the fourth quarter and people in the stands began to pack up and go home. Late in the third, Mike Bauer hit a three-pointer and scored two other baskets inside to keep his team within twenty.

The people that remained in the stands were treated to an awesome fourth quarter of basketball. Orenstein/Rose temporarily fell flat except for an amazing play by Grier. Now, Vince has supplied a number of highlights this summer with dunks and passes that have had people going crazy. He's dunked over people, passed it to himself off the board and dunked and scored on amazing drives. But last night's dunk was ridiculously incredible. He penetrated the lane with the basketball and flew Northwest style over Bauer and dunked on him with an amazing leaner. It looked something like the picture to the right, but Mike was up higher trying to defend and Vince finished this dunk a lot harder and right on Mike's head. I swear Vince was close to kissing the rim he was so high.

But that was it for Orenstein highlights as the Playaz stormed back. It started with Ohnstad who scored ten straight points for Carlstrom hitting a lay-up, some jumpers and a pair of free throws. Shortly after, Salscheider hit a three-pointer and then Rico Tucker, playing this week with the Playaz, stole an inbounds pass, was fouled and made a free throw. Bauer hit his second three-pointer of the game after a defensive stop to make the score 84-76. A pair of Bruce Price free throws made the score 84-78 before Boone broke the 19-3 Playaz run with a timely three-pointer, his third of the game.

The Playaz closed the lead to 87-83 as Price connected on his fist three-pointer and Keith scored inside. Jibrahn Ike, playing Orenstein/Rose, scored maybe the game's most important hoop as he received a pass from Grier and sunk a three-pointer making the score 90-83. This gave Orenstein some confidence and they began to step their game back up on both ends of the floor. A late open floor dunk from Grier gave his team an eleven point lead as he and Boone made free throws down the stretch to close out Carlstrom. Adam and Vince shot a combined 21 of 23 from the free throw line to go along with their combined 64 points. Augsburg's Luke Patterson also had a big game for Orenstein scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds and many of the boards were tough ricochets off the glass late in the fourth quarter.

The Howard Pulley Pro-Am league has some of the best basketball around in the summer in Minnesota. The games are very competitive with many local D1 players as well as current overseas and NBA players. It will be a good test for a player like Martin.

Howard Pulley for sure is a VERY good summer league. Losing to Grier and Boone by only 6 is impressive. Grier averaged 17 ppg for the Gophers last year. He also just got done winning a gold medal for the USA at the World University game and played a significant role. he had 10 points and 14 rebounds in the championship game. The team had guys from Duke, Syracuse, Stanford, Villanova, Boston College.

Martin is getting great experience. Can't wait to see him take his game to the next level.
