Martin Breunig

His name keeps getting mentioned in all the game threads. He has impressed many. Just thought it be a good idea to post Breunig opinions, etc on his own thread.

I am not sure how in the hell Washington let him get away, but sure am glad the GRIZ were beneficiaries of his departure there. Breunig is a complete player and does it all. In my opinion, he is a combo forward, meaning he can play SF and PF. He is by no means a Center, but is our best post threat. Offensively, he can drive to the basket, create for teammates, good passing skills, solid ball handler, has a lot of post moves, scores inside, with consistent range out to 22 feet. Not only is he skilled, he is also athletic, versatile, and agile. He is too small to be a true NBA PF. With continued improvement in ball handling and strength, I can see him getting a shot at the NBA. I might be underselling his strength some. He looked pretty comfortable moving Weber's bigs for position. He is also not afraid to play physical.

Defensively, he moves well and has great footwork. At worse, he holds his own even in mismatches of quick ball handlers and extremely strong physical players. He is a solid rebounder as well. I think he can step up the rebounding more.

I also have noticed, as the season has progressed he has become more vocal. He knows this system well. He is often directing players where to be and encouraging them. His teammates listen to him, trust him, and look to him to deliver. Granted, he is not officially a team captain, but is playing the role of one. Before the season ends, this team may be his team to lead on the court, with Gregory and Weisner moving on. I am not one bit worried about player leadership after this season.

What I see is a very special and rare player at Montana. He is already putting up great numbers while getting adjusted. He is capable of putting up 20 to 25 PPG. Not sure who heard Travis's post game interview after the Weber State game, but Travis heaped on kudos to him. When asked about scoring trouble, Travis replied something like "We should have gotten the ball to Martin more. He was in a zone. He is consistent. He earned the right to score more and we let him down." Travis added, when a team is struggling with a hot player, it is the team's responsibility to get a hot player the ball every trip down court and as often as possible. Travis honestly felt had the team got him the ball more, he could have put up a lot more points, and likely won the game.

Not many coaches are open about that kind of thing, and coaches don't very easily heap on that much praise to any 1 player. I could tell Travis was kicking himself hard for not letting Martin do more that game. To me, that told me Martin is ready to be an elite level player and earn recognition beyond the Big Sky. With that said, I won't be surprised to see Martin put up some Anthony Johnson, Rodney Stuckey, Damian Lillard, and Kareem Jamar like big games often. I won't be surprised to see Breunig average 20 plus points per game in conference play.

I feel that is very realistic due to team offensive struggles with consistency. Especially after seeing Breunig score at will against arguably the conferences best defensive team with conferences best post player (Weber/Bolomboy). Breunig can wreck havoc on this conference for 2 years. I have confidence he will be gain national attention by season's end. I don't know to what extent Martin wants to be recognized, but his game will bring him recognition and attention.

Keep it up Martin and I for one will enjoy your 2 years at Montana. I feel with Breunig's work ethic, he will get a shot at the NBA. GO MARTIN and GO GRIZ!!!!

Agreed. Breunig is a tremendous player. Don't know why he didn't get to play at UW. Either he improved alot last year, or UW coaches were asleep. I think he has a chance to go down as one of the all-time Griz greats. Including his last game, which is not yet in the ncaa stats, he's shooting 64.5%, which would put him in a tie for 5th in the nation.

"Martin Breunig's 31 points vs Weber St. was good enough to boost his FG% to 6th best in the nation! (http://web1.ncaa.org/stats/StatsSrv/rankings" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)."

It is pretty nice to have Matthias Ward (inside, outside coring), Andrew Strait (great post moves), Derek Selvig (good passer, outside shooter), and Brian Qvale (rebounder, inside scorer) all in one player. :D :thumb:

He should have some more post support next season. I hear DeJong and Boehning (sp?)are developing very nicely as redshirts. That could help explain why DeCuire has yet to heavily pursue any more post players. I do have a feeling one post player will emerge in the late recruiting period.

Against Weber State, Travis went big for several minute with Kemp, Krslovic, and Breunig. With that line up, Breunig was playing SF on offense, and defending perimeter players. He did not have any problem at all at SF. To be honest, I feel SF/3 is his best position.
