Martin and Young

I will remember Young's three in the NCAAs and Martin's defensive play. Both are fine young men and we are better for having had them as members of our community.

I don't beleive he transferred. From earlier threads I beleive TD pulled his schollie.

Last I knew, he is attending school this year still on his scholarship. Due to horrible timing in hiring TD, Martin was notified he would not be part of team this season. He was notified after the deadline for his scholarship to not be honored.

I am sure DC was hoping his not being on the team would be enough for him to transfer schools to open up another scholarship. That is not how it turned out though. I am sure I would have told my child, don't give up the scholarship, they are obligated to honor it until the end of this school year. At least the scholarship is being used by a great student.

An unfortunate outcome of an otherwise great situation(the hire of TD). Glad to hear his schollie is still being honored. I'm sure he's a great kid, never having met him i wouldnt know. Just a clash of styles and TD having to make what I'm sure(I hope) was a very tuff decision. Thnx for the insight grizrule.

Both were irrelevant and neither fit the current play style. Glad we got rid of them. Good kids tho hope they excel somewhere else

This is kind of "in your face," and sort of an unnecessary comment.

I didn't realize a style of play had even been established.

Pretty sure coach had a style and look in mind and neither looked to fit. The raw talent of both never developed. Tinkle had ties and couldn't cut those.

Martin was never going to play at this level. If that is true, then why waste a slot on him? Sometimes the truth is hard to digest.

Term it how you'd like. Rather Andy is on the team or not, he is on scholarship this school year. With depth so hard to come by in the post, I feel it would have been wiser to have him play this season, see how it played out, then make a decision. Fair evaluation could have been done as well.

Fair evaluation? Not disagreeing here, but what do you mean?

Should have kept him this season. I feel it would have been fair to tell Andy, he would have his work cut out for him because of the style of ball he wanted to play. Basically take advantage of the whole school year to evaluate if Andy could work or not in the new system? Plus we are lacking depth in the post, it certainly would have helped keeping Andy.

Then again, the late hiring of DeCuire really put him in a bad situation. An earlier hire would have given Travis enough time to evaluate everyone better, and any player not remaining time to find another school to play at. Unfortunately, the decision was not made until after Andy's scholarship was committed to him for this school year, which was also too late to find another school to transfer to. Just a bad situation for all.

Either way, I support Andy and this staff. Just wish things could have played out better for everyone involved.

When a high school kid is 7 feet tall, college coaches are willing to take a chance that he will develop into a player. Martin's high school numbers were awful, so "potential" is the only thing he had going for him coming to UM. after watching him play, it became quite obvious that he was never going to develop into a player who could help the program. So, you move on. I am glad he kept his scholarship for all of the hard work he put into the BB program.

I got the impression from Coach Decuire's press conference (on gogriz.com) that there might have been an issue regarding Andy's dedication (summer workouts, etc. possibly?)

Your guess is as good as mine on that. I do know Andy was 1 of a handful of players in Missoula through the GRIZ team camp. I spoke to him. Andy, was excited for the upcoming season. He was looking forward to it. He indicated he dedicated his summer to staying in Missoula to improve. It looked to me he had spent some time in the weight room. He looked bigger in the shoulders and maybe 10 lbs heavier than when the season ended

So I do know he was stepping up his commitment. If there is/was another conflict, I am not sure what it would be. I do know, Andy is very dedicated to his future, including his education. So maybe those priorities were taking too much of his time, or too difficult to work into the time Travis may have wanted from him in basketball. I honestly don't know. It is good to see Andy and the team has moved on, and Andy is on scholarship to pursue his future.

I just wish it would have turned out better for all parties. It likely would have turned out better if the timing of DeCuire's hire were better. That is a disadvantage of being a school in small to mid sized conference. With all that being water under the bridge now, I am excited for basketball season to tip off. :thumb:

As I noted last season, I thought Andy represented a lot of potential that needed to be challenged. He's a fine young man, outstanding in many ways, but he needed to be "roughed up" a bit under the basket, and I thought Wayne was, personally, the only guy that could really "get" Andy there. I suggested that Wayne himself ought to get out on the court one-on-one and challenge Andy, and push him, and that just didn't happen.

As a long-time coach myself, it was easy to see that Andy was an archetype "passive" personality. He's such a nice kid, very easy going, a wry sense of humor, it's hard to get him "fired up," angry to the point of "driving" to the basket or the goal. It's a little hard to describe the mood-state. But, when the buttons are pushed, he had the physical talents to do so, and could do so, it was just a matter of finding "the buttons" and someone willing to push them.

Good point, 75. But we've had a couple of other very nice, polite and "mannered" young men in Andrew Strait and Brian Qvale. Both were "nice," even while on the playing floor, in fact.

But when the game was flowing, no one pushed them around. Nonetheless, it was a learning process for both. I do agree it takes a good big man's coach to "push the buttons" in a positive & constructive manner.

For Strait and Qvale, on-floor toughness gradually became a part of their playing style. To their credit, their ability to stand their ground -- more than that... dominate the low blocks -- eventually made them the all-conference centers they became.

Strait learned that a bit sooner than Qvale. Strait's coach, when he made his biggest improvement: Larry K.

Qvale has obviously continued to develop as a power center. He wouldn't be where he is today otherwise.
