My take on the scrimmage is the Griz have a ton of talent and competition to get on the court is going to be intense. Even more so if Gaskin is allowed to play, he is a stud. The returning seniors looked really good as did those freshmen. All three could play right away. Anderson looked a lot stronger and played well and the big kid from Turkey can play.Egun played well (especially on D) and Brown can flat out shoot. And Samuelson and Falls didn't even dress. Steadman will be a beast in a year. It is hard to break down players in a 20 minute scrimmage and I knew the Griz would be talented but they are way more talented and deep than I thought. And the defensive intensity for a scrimmage was very high. In part I believe because of the competition for playing spots. I would say the only two that are a lock to start would be Sayeed and Manuel. The rest will be a battle.UMFan12 said:Thoughts?
Who is going to redshirt this year, and who starts are 2 major questions I think we have going into this season.
Go Griz
Your take was on target, UncleRico. I would add that I was blown away with frosh Josh Vasquez, who played the point for both silver & maroon squads. He shoots right-handed (most of the time). But watch his drive into traffic that starts with his left hand, switches to his right & finishes with a perfect right-handed laser assist to Eddy Egun in the corner. Egun, by my count, made the most treys in the 3-pt shooting contest..UncleRico said:My take on the scrimmage is the Griz have a ton of talent and competition to get on the court is going to be intense. Gaskin looks like a complete package. Yagi looks stronger than I envisioned and should be the guy to handle post studs. Also thought he moved well and has a decent looking j. Eddy will get a ton of steals/rebounds and seems to have a decent handle. DJ looks very explosive and had a couple nice O boards. Vasquez appears to be a very heady and always under control though a bit tentative (not unexpectedly as a frosh). Sayeed manned him up and pressured him for a bit and bothered him. He has a smooooth J and I'm sure will get used to more aggressive college level D. So at least 3 guys can easily handle the 1. But who really knocked my socks off was KO. He slashed to the hoop early, avoiding the charge and I thought I can't recall a Griz at 6'8" with those ball skills and slashing ability. He has a silky looking J as well having caught the 3 point shootout. In 4 years he will be near the all time scoring lead I'll predict.
I'm jacked to watch these guys progress. They all went hard on D and when they absorb the system with the seeming depth should be able pressure other teams all game. Multiple guys with the size to guard backcourt and wings, probably 8 guys who could get you 15 in a game if needed. If all goes right this could be a formidable and very deep group by March and watching their interactions on court they seem to be on the way.
Hoops watcher said:If Steadman could play this year I could see a redshirt for DJ as his O skills seem a little rawer than KO, though that's only relative with a very small sample size. Given that Yagi can't play until the new year depth at the 4 and 5 is a real thing and I'd guess no one will redshirt. The 3 new kids have all played against D1 level talent in HS so won't be in over their heads if that's the case.
The thing that will be fun is watching the new guys develop and learn. As great as last years bunch was we knew what we had going into the season. If all goes right TDC could have a very deep bench with very little drop off in talent. Should make citay happy, lol.
