Some details on Griz lacrosse for those asking what the level of competition is and what a club sport really looks like.
There are 70 Division lacrosse varsity teams and 10 conferences: AEC, ACC, Big East, Big 10, CAA, Independents, Ivy League, MAAC, Northeast Conference, Patriots League and Southern Conference.
As you can see, it's incredibly regional, all on the East Coast. Those 10 leagues are NCAA conferences.
The Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association is the governing body for all other college lacrosse. These teams are "club teams" but it's much different than almost every other club team. While they don't receive athletic scholarships that come from the GSA or other fundraising or institutional efforts, many athletes do receive aid of some sort, just not in association with the athletic departments.
The programs also raise a significant amount of money and play very competitive schedules. They practice just like a varsity college team and travel all across the region and the country. I would venture that both the Griz lacrosse and hockey teams have comparable if not larger budgets than several "non-revenue" varsity sports at the University of Montana.
The Montana LAX team plays in MCLA Division II, which is very similar to FCS football. MCLA Division I includes schools like South Carolina, Georgia tech, BYU, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Liberty, Minnesota, Concordia, USC, Florida (last year's final Top 10 I believe).
MCLA Division II includes teams like Montana, Montana State (very competitive as well), Utah, Rhode Island, St. Thomas, Grand Valley State, UNC Charlotte, Missouri State, College of Idaho, Utah State, North Dakota State, San Diego and the Air Force Academy (every team there finished in the Top 20 last season).
Montana won the PNCLL last season and won two games at the national tournament to advance to the national semifinals. The Griz have been to the Final Four three times and have won a national title (2007). UM finished No. 4 in the country last season while North Dakota State was No. 12 and MSU No. 13.
One of the first story I ever wrote for the Montana Kaimin was about the creation of the Griz Lacrosse close to 20 years ago. Now, at ESPN MT, we stream all the games on our ESPN MT app. It's not a crazy audience or a huge money maker, but it's a very fun product with good athletes and we have a core audience that's larger than you probably think.
They play at Washington-Grizzly Stadium in the spring. Lacrosse is a super fun sport to watch. If you are ever bored, go check them out. It's super cheap to go and you'll have fun as long as the Hellgate winds aren't blowing.
I could go on about how the "club model" could have a future or be THE future of non-Power 5 sports at small colleges like Montana but I'll save that for a radio segment
