Mandy In, Britney Out

Obviously Selvig knew the extent of Mandy's foot injury. Morales led both teams Sunday night with 20 points, going 6-for-11 from the field and 5-for-9 from 3-point range. She also added five assists, four boards and two steals. Ho Hum night for Mandy. Closson named MVP of the tourney while Mandy and Tam also make the tournament team. Lady Griz have now won 22 straight games in December.

Not only did Johanna Closson win the MVP of the Lady Griz Holiday tournament (which she so deserved - her most consistent weekend to date this year), she was named Big Sky Player of the Week.

Lady Griz and ISU I consider the favorites to beat. PSU will certianly be competitive. But PSU's schedule is the second weakest schedule in the conference. ISU's schedule was the toughest followed by the Lady Griz. WSU will also compete strongly.

I wouldn't count out NAU either. They have had a ton of injuries so they haven't been close to full strength yet.

I'd say Portland State is close to being the team to beat in wbb, along with ISU (Doma, Hixon and Lightfoot) and Northern Colorado in the Final Four of the BSC Tournament with the LG. NAU lost too much in Natalie Metz, Kim Winkfield, Megan Porter and three time 1st Team BSC Alyssa Wahl.

They have 2 starters, Dinkins (BSC Defensive POY) and Cunningham (Hon Mention All BSC) back, along with a couple of JC transfers. Besides the injuries, they are fairly young, but will be plenty dangerous by tournament time. I agree they won't challenge for the regular season title.

I guess I should revise whom I thought was active for Idaho State. Looks like Hixon hasn't played yet this year with Doma @ 23 ppg and Lightfoot with 16.5. A mighty good twosome but difficult to win it all in the BSC relying on but two players and the rest as role/bench. PSU does have Kahle (18 ppg) with Conway (15 ppg) with Faucher @ 12, but they lost Ritter from last year and now have six freshmen listed on their roster; mighty young team when experience really counts in conference play. MSU could conceivably have a shot at the Final four in the BSC as well if they can overcome their injuries and have their freshmen develop; a good combination of experience (five seniors) and youth there. Strand was considered potential PAC 10 if she had more speed to her game. MSU may have gotten a steal on that one, as well as Seidensticker.

msu isn't playing Defense or rebounding. Those are areas that don't get fixed overnight. I see a lot of games where they start well, but cannot finish. I don't see them being higher than 4th, at best.

That was a delivered viewpoint forgetting that 5' 8" Jr. G Whitley Cox when down with a knee injury after eight games, averaging 20 ppg. They did have some good games beforehand in defeating San Francisco, Colorado St., Pacific and San Jose St., but after the key injury Northern Colorado lost to Wyoming by 31. Without injuries I thought that they could at least be in the final six by tournament time, but now I don't know.

Of course, I think (what else would I think?) it's a mistake to assume that ISU is only Lightfoot and Doma. It's true they're the best, by far...but there's plenty of quality on that team. PG Jenna Brown also among the nation's assist leaders at 43rd, and ISU leads the nation (as a team) in free throw shooting...2nd in 3's per game, 20th in 3-pt. ptg. (UM is 15th), 10th in assts/to ratio, 38th in assists/game, 29th in turnovers a game. There's a lot of teamwork involved in those numbers.

I can't wait until the LG get to Pocatello on the 17th...it should be a GREAT game! Good luck tonight against the Cats!
