The Contra Costa (Calif.) College quarterback, Malik Watson, is handling recruiting different this time around...
Contra Costa (Calif.) College quarterback Malik Watson committed to Montana as a senior, but decided to go the JC route.
Set to be the primary signal-caller at Contra Costa this fall, Watson has a number of schools showing interest in him, including ones that recruited him in high school.
“Arizona State came and watched me throw, and Houston liked me from earlier,” said Watson. “Houston almost offered me right before Signing Day (in February 2012), but after the coaching change, they went a different direction. Coach (Jamie) Christian recruited me when he was at Arizona State and now he’s at Houston and I’ve been talking with him.”
Watson, who also had offers from Idaho, Eastern Washington, Northern Arizona, Delaware State and Texas Southern out of high schools, is eager for this season, where he’ll get a chance to throw more and increase his options.
“I’m really riding the recruiting process different than I did in high school,” said Watson. “I’m focusing more on what I can control this time. I’m really focusing on the season.”
The 6-3, 218-pounder was a full qualifier out of high school, so he’ll be done in December and can leave with three years to play two seasons.
Watson is excited about what Contra Costa will do this fall on offense.
“Our new offense is all spread, nothing underneath center,” said Watson. “In high school, we were only under center, so I’m open to anything. I love fast paced spread or triple option and I’m good in multiple personnel.”
