Majerus looking at ASU Job

Of course Majerus denies it, which means it is true in the Sporting world.

Majerus refuses to confirm reports of ASU meetingESPN.com news services

PHOENIX -- Reports say that Rick Majerus has met with Arizona State's athletic director about the Sun Devils' coaching job.

Majerus, however, isn't confirming them.

"That's news to me," Majerus said when asked about the report by ESPN.com.

However, a person familiar with the meeting confirmed Tuesday that Lisa Love met this week with Majerus in Milwaukee, where the former Utah coach lives.

In December 2004, Majerus accepted the job at Southern California but resigned five days later, saying he was "not fit enough for this job from my standards." Love was a USC athletics administrator at the time.

Majerus, currently a college basketball analyst for ESPN, could not be reached for comment.

An ASU athletic department spokesman said Love would not comment on the coaching search.

The 58-year-old Majerus has a career record of 422-147 in 20 seasons at Marquette, Ball State and Utah. He has led 11 teams to the NCAA Tournament, including his 1998 Utah squad which lost to Kentucky in the national title game.

Majerus has been intrigued by Arizona State before. Shortly after the Utes played in the 1998 Final Four, Majerus met with then-Arizona State athletic director Kevin White about the Sun Devils job but decided to remain in Utah. Arizona State hired Rob Evans.

Majerus, who went 323-95 in 15 seasons with the Utes, missed parts of three seasons with health problems. He missed the last 30 games of the 2000-01 season while recovering from knee and heart surgery and tending to his ailing mother. He resigned 20 games into the 2003-04 season after being hospitalized with chest pains.

Majerus has stayed close to college basketball as an ESPN analyst and has made it known that he wants to return to coaching.

Love announced March 10 that she had decided that Evans, who went 119-120 in eight seasons in Tempe, would not return next year. Neither the university nor Evans has said whether he quit or was fired.

At the news conference announcing Evans' departure, Love said head coaching experience and familiarity with the West Coast would be significant factors in the search for a replacement.

Information from the Associated Press is included in this report

Wow. I would think Majerus would be very successful in Tempe. I could never understand why they weren't always successful there. Can't be hard to recruit there: sun, beautiful Tempe; even more beautiful co-eds.

Either way, though, I know that the wing joints in the area will do very well if he takes the job.

Not even that long. Majerus is no longer a candidate due to health issues. It didn't look as though he has done much to get himself into shape. It is too bad because he is one hell of a coach. I am afraid one of these days we are going to read about him having a heart attack.

Does ASU have a medical school.

I assume you are kidding, but no. Nursing is as close as they get

You are right about him being a great coach. He learned at the hands of one of the great ones in Al Maguire. I don't think we will ever see him coach again. He has had time to try and shed the weight and get to where he needs to be. Its just not happening though.

He is funny as hell too. I used to travel on business monthly to SLC and stayed at the same hotel he lived in the entire time he was at Utah. He would walk though the lobby in the morning in his shorts, T shirt and a whistle around his neck, talking to everyone. I really like his persoanlity.

I have heard stories about him being like that. I also remember the one about how when VanHorns dad died how he took Keith out for dinner and a talk about life. I bet he said some great things, knowing about the frailties of life.
