Breaking: Northern Illinois’ board on Tuesday expected to accept offer to join Mountain West as football-only member in 2026, industry sources said. The addition of MAC’s most successful program gives MW 9 football schools, stretching 4 time zones. NIU expected to receive substantially more revenue in MW than in MAC. NIU considering several options where its non-football sports will play, sources said. Adding NIU in football plus Grand Canyon & UC Davis as non-football members are final pieces of MW’s expansion, source said

So that means in Football the MWC consists of: UNLV, Nevada, Air Force, SJSU, New Mexico, Wyoming, Hawaii, UTEP, and NIU. That gives them 9 total teams for a perfect 8 game round robin conference schedule where everybody will play each other.

Then in Basketball, NIU goes out and UC Davis and Grand Canyon come in for 10 total teams and a perfect 18 game double round robin schedule where everyone will play each other twice. Good work by the MWC. For the most part, it looks like they got every team they courted so they gotta be feeling pretty satisfied with how this played out for them.

The PAC I believe still needs to add one more team and there hasn't been much news on that for a while. Depending on who they are able to add, that could kick start another wave of realignment, but unlikely to trickle down to the Montana schools.

I would think if the lawsuits against the Mountain West go through in a good way for the departing schools (recent exit), UNLV would be a school that the PAC12 should probably try and grab.

They promised both UNLV and Air Force a certain percentage of the exit/poaching fees to stay. If it goes to a settlement (good chance it will) they may not get enough $$ to keep UNLV and Air Force
