Not football related, but saw this today and thought appropriate considering this weekends opponent.

This is just getting extreme ... as in "stupid."

Apparently at least half of the tribes calling themselves "Sioux" thought it honored their tradition and culture; unless you are a full-blown loon, or a recent recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, the "Fighting Sioux" is not derogatory and certainly was never meant to be. Given the courageous resistance to the US Army, it was an honored distinction. So, the thought censors got their way on something remarkably ridiculous. What's next?

The "Dakota" were a subtribe of the "Sioux."

So, at what point is some delicate buttercup going to be offended by the fact that a university athletic team is from "North Dakota"?

On the other hand, before they became the "Sioux" in 1930, they were called the "Flickertails." That does have a ring to it.

- There were roughly 150 pages of people suggesting the old nickname, Fighting Sioux, or just Sioux. About 80 of those pages had the same description, "We're fighting back!" while others spelled it Soo or Sue.

- Both Cuddly Kerpaws "because my cat is really cute and brings a lot of good luck....BTW kerpaw is also my cats name," and also Fighting Kerpaws "because sometimes kerpaw is not so cuddly and really likes to fight."

Why don't the leaders of UND go to the indian tribes and ask them to name their sports teams? This way no one would have an issue.....

Not a bad idea at all. "We would like to find a way to honor your legacy. What would you like us to name our teams?"

They did. Years ago there was a pile ceremony which gave the name to UND. That is t holding water anymore. One tribe did not let the members vote on the name therefore it was not allowed
 
Quick everyone....retreat to your safe place...where the world cant say anything or name anything without offending someone. Nothing can get you in your safe place tho.....quick everyone here comes reality.....boooooooo
 
Political correctness, in all its forms, really makes me sick. there is no need. When, as a society are we going to learn that there is NO POSSIBLE WAY to please all of the people, all of the time? Apparently, NEVER!!!!!! We seem to want to continue to bash our heads against the opposing views brick walls, as they do ours. We need to just accept the fact that there always has been, are now, and always will be different views and opinions on EVERYTHING. I did find this particular quote in that article both quite humorous, and most telling on how I think all of this hub bub about sports nicknames should be.

If I had it my way, they would remain the Sioux, but no one cares what I think! I am sure the Sioux tribe doesn't have any issues with the name. Political correctness in this country is out of control and needs to stop! Vote Donald Trump!

Uhh...? It was the Sioux tribe that brought this forward, hence the reason they're changing their name.
 
I believe the Sioux tribe was congured into believing this was insulting, I can't believe they initiated this request to change the name. I am sure some where the NAACP or one of those hugger organizations are behind it. I am not big on political correctness at all. For the most part, the UND fighting Sioux have made the the tribe proud, especially in hockey. Maybe I am wrong altogether, but if I was in charge of UND, the name would not change.
