Fife is an upgrade from McDowell.
McDowells passing wasn't the greatest but, he could run like a mfer n plow dudes over, he was an amazing leader, and played with a ton of heart/fire. That kind of heart mixed with the swagger is extremely hard to find at the fcs level.
Until he didn't.

Until he didn't what?

Idk what your problem is with McDowell... One of the best overall QBs we've had in years. Unless you're racist? That's the only thing I can think of.

He wasn’t one of the best QB’s in years. He wasn’t as good as good as hardly any of starters when they were healthy. In my view.

I simply don’t understand the negativity surrounding McDowell. He did a fine job leading the program back to prominence this past year. I wish him well. He is gone and it appears the coaches are doing an excellent job of filling needs this year. If everyone could stop complaining for five seconds and look at the positives it would be refreshing. Delusional? Yep.

Agreed 100%. See my post on him entering the portal thread.

I know USC's defense wasn't the best this year, but it's still USC...that is a pretty impressive stat.

That was USC last year. But the D was just about as bad...I remember that game. Fife was impressive. If he can match that play, he's gonna be tough to beat out

Best recent game he had was vs USU this past season, looks like he was filling in for their injured starter and more importantly to me a game where he had 0 turnovers. That's my only concern with him, he needs to cut down on the interceptions.

That's yet to be seen. I honestly doubt it. McDowells passing wasn't the greatest but, he could run like a mfer n plow dudes over, he was an amazing leader, and played with a ton of heart/fire. That kind of heart mixed with the swagger is extremely hard to find at the fcs level. McDowell had 1 loss as a starter here and that was the championship. McDowell was a stud for us. Will be harder to replace than a lot of you think.
I'm just talking about play. Not sure on leadership, etc. I've seen both play. Fife is better.

SDSU & NDSU don’t win it all with transfers.
If you wanna be the best it’s time to start building a program like the best.

Major FBS schools have won a championship with transfer qb's. That is a take that is just not rooted in modern college football reality.

It would be better to NOT bring in transfers, and just try to develop kids and hope they don't transfer out?

South Dak. St. recent transfers (December and January):

"Former Oklahoma offensive lineman Marcus Hicks announced his commitment to South Dakota State on Monday." 12/4/23.

"Signed Financial Aid Agreement to attend USD as a transfer [12/23]

Name Pos. Ht. Wt. Hometown High School/Previous School
Jonathan Bunce LB 6-3 240 Edina, Minn. Edina HS/St. Thomas (Minn.)
Adrian Hawkins OL 6-6 290 Baltimore, Md. DeMatha Catholic HS/Monmouth (N.J.)
Carter Hooper DL 6-5 265 Toronto, Ont. IMG Academy (Fla.)/UConn"

[1/24] - 3 more transfers

"Joining the Jackrabbit football program as transfers are defensive end Blake Peterson and cornerback Cody Cotton.

Peterson, a 6-foot-4, 255-pound defensive end, returns to his home state as a graduate transfer from Iowa State. The Beresford High School product played in 28 games over the past three years for the Cyclones and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. He tallied 21 tackles and two sacks during his Iowa State career as he also saw action on special teams.

A three-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree, Peterson graduated from Iowa State with a bachelor's degree in business management and plans to pursue an advanced degree in animal science at SDSU. He will be a second-generation Jackrabbit as his father, Brandon, lettered at SDSU from 1997-99.

Cotton, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound cornerback, made his collegiate debut this past fall at Upper Iowa University, where he led the team with three interceptions and ranked second on the squad with eight pass breakups. A native of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, Cotton also contributed 35 total tackles (27 solo) in 10 games.

Previously, Cotton was an all-state performer as a running back at Union Grove High School. He plans to pursue a degree in construction management.

Another addition to the Jackrabbit roster this spring is linebacker Andrew Gustad, who enrolled at SDSU last fall after a highly decorated career at Gayville-Volin High School. A three-time all-conference honoree, as well as an all-state selection in 2021, Gustad tallied 114 total tackles, including 18 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks as a prep senior."

Set the tone with culture. Players stay.
Become a portal school and get gutted by the portal as well.

We only lost 5 guys total to the portal. And only one of them played meaningful snaps. That is incredible in this day and age. I think the culture is as good as it can get right now.

The tone is already set at Montana. The culture is winning.

My apologies if that doesn't fit your narrative.

That is working out well for Clemson. Portal activity is necessary today.

Why not both? A culture where players stay, and bring in more talent. The portal is a part of reality in college sports now. We cannot stand at the mountain top of history and scream "STOP," expecting that the world will bow to our will.

Choosing not to utilize the portal is choosing to be a less talented team.
