Little Bit of History: UM played Wyoming in Billings during the 50s and 60s

I was listening to an old interview with Brent Musberger, and he was saying his dad helped organize a series of neutral site games between UM and Wyoming during the 50s and 60s. Apparently they did this for about 6 years. And strangely, the Griz hosted the Cowboys in Missoula more often than the Griz went to Laramie.

We were in the same con known as the Mountain States Con or aka the Skyline Con from '51-'62 along with BYU, Utah, Utah St, Col St, N Mex, and Den. We didn't do very well.

Oh, yeah. Honestly, before Read, Montana didn't have a decent season before 1969. And it was a long time after 1970 before the Griz had a decent one again. The last 30 years are when Montana has actually had a successful program.

In some ways, we mirror Oregon football in our history.

We had a couple brief stints w/ success in the mid 20's and late 30's actually finishing ranked in the top 25 in one of the more obscure polls in '38. It was largely thanks to some NFL caliber Montana born talent.

It is true we took our lumps in the Skyline Conference, but we were actually playing in a quality conference. Now, we can't win against schools like Northern Colorado and Montana State in a lackluster conference like the Big Sky. Did we finish 8th?

By the way, I'm not in favor of moving up. I may be in favor of moving to Division2 if we continue to have results like last year.

That's a bit over dramatic, don't you think? It was still a winning season.

Apparently you didn't get the notice that this ship is sinking. That's why all the women and children are abandoning first. I'm going down with this sinking ship though.

Yeppers, I attended on of those games while I was still growing up in Missoula, I would say around 1962 or 63 sometime. Rode over to Billings with my best friend Mike Newburn, his dad Harry, his mom and Bob Panzer and his wife. The Griz "almost" won that one" . ( I think) Quite the trip.

Thanks to some cupcakes. 3-5 in conference. Calling that winning is quite "dramatic."

I went to most of those games in Billings. Bob Devaney coached Wyoming was as good as we were bad. Our AD budget was a pittance.

Even then, a young Brent was taking bets against the spread behind the concession stands.

Recently saw Brent commentating a drunk volleyball game at Stock Farm. Was hilarious. He also narrated their video tour.

The Skyline then reorganized as the WAC without UM and USU.

The Grizz and Idaho chose to build the Big Sky with Weber, ISU, and Gonzaga. Barf 🤢!

The rest as they say is history.

I was at that game. So you were with an existing UM President and future President.

Yes, at the time Mr. Panser was the existing VP I believe, and Mr. Newburn was the sitting president. (As it were)
