Oh yeah!
It's early (and NDak had some injuries). Montana WBB looked pretty ragged at times... but the key to its 72-51 win over NDak was halftime and 3rd quarter coaching adjustments. Sammy Fatkin was phenomenal and will have a huge impact on Montana's improvement this season. When that happens, Abby Anderson and Carmen Gfeller won't have to deal with getting double- and triple-teamed.
Most of the Griz mistakes were turnovers that were the result of playing a decidedly uptempo game. I'm pretty certain we'll see the team adjust to that pace with improved court vision.
But the big story to me has been the early play of Helena frosh Dani Bartsch, in particular, and the high promise (and shooting skill) of frosh Haley Huard. Montana's front and back court are suddenly deep. Bartsch has an uncanny natural court vision and Huard has a classic shooting guard quick set-and-trigger shot. Both are showing nerves, but I think it's only a matter of a week or two until they settle in. I'm eager to see how this team transforms, because the result will give Carmen (in particular) and Abby more room to have front court impact. Here are a couple of clips that give an idea about Montana's ramped up pace of play.
