LadyGriz LG vs Idaho State

Slowly, but what seems to be, surely, they are figuring it out. 3 wins in a row sans Mack. This is a really good win against a team who we all know has a great coach and usually the best defense in the league. ISU just beat the lady cats by 19! So as frustrated as many of us have been, I think we can agree that they are getting better. Also, hats off to the girls and the staff for not throwing in the towel after a 20-9 first quarter deficit.

I considered this game a battle between David and Goliath and David won. It was a great win by the lady griz

Are the Lady Griz figuring it out? Three in a row and now they head home to take on PSU and Sac. Two teams that are struggling. Wish they could’ve figured it out sooner but at least they’re getting it together now!

"Awakening"...take a look at this stat sheet : https://gogriz.com/sports/womens-basketball/stats/2025/idaho-st-/boxscore/6348 Seeing is believing, so shots went down, we did the 3's big time, got the 2's, free throws...the ball went into the basket from all angles! Big were the assists, and rebounds, our offense flow was swift, the defense was mean. Ehrman and Wacker show, relentless scorers, some of these shots were from way out there. Pulling something out of the hat, we'll take this one...keep tearing it up!!

Not sure, but keep reading she could be back any week. Anyway, Lady Griz are 3 - 10 with Konig, and 3 - 3 without her. Do we want her back?
That's a good question, because we're getting a glimpse of what the Lady Griz could be like without her next season because she is a senior and won't be back. So far they are actually looking pretty good without her but the games have been a little too close for comfort. If they do a better job of taking care of the ball and crash the glass more effectively then maybe those margins of victory would be a little bigger (they had 21 turnovers compared to ISU's 12, plus they got out-rebounded in both games on this road trip).

But then again, no victory is 100 percent perfect.

Yes, you always want great players back. If I was Nate, I would make sure to bring her in slowly and make it important to Mack that the offense doesn't have to be just her and to work within the flow of the offense.

Personally, I think they are looking pretty good without her because there are some players that are now more involved. Getting more support from other players that wouldn't see the light of day much if Konig didn't go down with injury.

Wacker is the first player to show the most improvement after Konig went down with injury. Gillette became starter and finally the past 3 games started to become a factor on offense.

Rae Erhman has always been a threat but the last two games she was the reason the Lady Griz won. Would this have become possible if Konig didn't get injured?

Konig Scored a lot of points, but since she got injured, her points were slowly being made up by other players. Makes me wonder when she comes back, she will try to be that scorer again but not resulting in anymore points for the team.

Of course, Lady Griz were in the top 25 I believe with the fewest turnovers when Konig was playing. After she went down, Lady Griz started to rely on Waddington more which I know some of you think she is a good ball handler. She is for a player her size, but she is no Magic Johnson. Since Konig was injured she has turned the ball over 5 or more times, in 4 of the last 6 games. Too many.

My opinion and I have heard others regarding this, Konig should not be the point guard. Either Donarsky or Wacker should bring the ball down to initially setup the offense. This may help spread out the offensive production among more players instead of having it be the Konig show. It may still end up being that if all they do is pass it to Konig and she starts trying to take up a lot time in the possession to find a way to the hoop.

As for looking for a glimpse of next year, Kate Holmquist could be the point guard taking over Konig. Shorter, but coach says she does a lot of things that Konig does.

As for rebounding, Lady Griz do just fine when it comes to defensive rebounding. It is offensive rebounding where they fall short and that is part of the 5 out offense that Nate has them do. Too many times the players are all outside of the key with no chance to rebound it. I think Nate could come up with a way to fix that. Maybe later this season or for next season.

I like Konig but a lot of blown layups

Did anyone else recognize the defense the LG ran against Idaho State? I may be wrong but it sure looks like the Robin Selvig matchup zone. It had Idaho State confused from the 2nd quarter on.

There were opportunities the LG can work on in the future. One being the wing/baseline defender sinking down to the lane when the ball is on the opposite wing/baseline. It also looked like the wing/baseline defender was widening rather than sinking when the ball rotated away from them on the perimter.

The backdoor cuts by the LG really helped the offensive flow and created a number of easy baskets and opened up the three point line.

Not sure if the switching rotation at the top of the key is the same, but Montana's ability to disrupt penetration into in the key is very similar. It's clear to me this group has improved its zone significantly with each game. ISU coach Seton Sobolewski was very frustrated at GrizWBB weak-side help on D in the key.

Fun game to watch!

At least I see the strategy now: Hoist the trey's and hope to outshoot your opponent. In the case of Idaho State, that worked. They are not a great shooting three-point team. And it looks like we have a few players who can shoot from deep.

Without a big post player this may be the best strategy.

But, oh! The turnovers! You cannot win consistently committing so many turnovers. This teams needs a ball handler.

I'd like to see Waddington be a bit more aggressice once she drives into the paint. Seemed instead of taking that shot, she'd spin and look to pass it back out for a trey. Got stripped the ball several times. I think she'd be unstoppable if she looked for her shot there.

How Idaho State ever beat Montana State I will never know.

Anyone can beat anyone on any given day.
ISU has the best defense in the league (around 59 points/game) and held MSU relatively close to their season average (1 point off). Something MSU could not do. ISU shot the lights out during all four quarters - 46.67% was the worst quarter. Shot over 60% in 2 quarters, and mid 50% the other one.
Some days a team with a good defense (MSU - allows only 64/game) just has a bad day. Too bad the Lady Griz couldn't have had a great day on offense and MSU have a real bad day on defense back on the 18th.

Didn't Mack play like a true PG last year, not looking to score all the time? Maybe she thinks she needs to be the scorer this year because of what you lost. But being out injured is showing her and the other girls that they can be depended on.

Maybe.
Konig was the leading scorer last year. So I think she was looked on for quite a bit of scoring last year also, though not quite as much, and most likely taking on a lot more of the leadership role this year. Team wise, Turnovers were lower while Konig was playing although her turnovers increased this year (considerably) and assists lower (even greater difference). Currently, the turnovers aren't really coming from the point guard since Konig was injured.

But her time away has allowed other players to start stepping up that I do not believe would happen if Konig wasn't injured. Next year will be better for it.

But, it would be nice when Konig comes back. She doesn't have to be the point guard to be that scorer.
