LadyGriz LG versus NAU

No Defense at all. Offense stood flat footed on the outside while they tried to pass the ball inside to the post for 20 seconds on every possession, absolutely no ball movment. Only reason NAU didn't score over a 100 was that Payne started pulling her starters with 5 min to go. NAU was smoking hot, but mostly because they were wide open. The only positive thing from this game they shot 100 % from the free throw line, but so did NAU.
I had to go home and take asprin this was so painful.

I had an idea this was going to be a high scoring game. Especially by one team. NAU has the best offense in the league (80 points a game) but also the worst defense in the league (72+/- points given up). This has been Loree Payne's system since the start. Score enough points that will overcome so-so defense. It's worked very well against every team except one. Problem comes when they meet up with a team with actually good defense like against MSU which gives up only 55 points a game. It's why they lost to MSU twice. NAU did score over 10 points over MSU average defense average but couldn't hold MSU below NAU's average defensive average. Not sure if NAU could depend on their defense when their offense isn't doing so well unless against some bad teams.
It may have appeared to be a joke about firing Loree Payne before her being considered, but I would rather have a decent offence and a reliable defense that can hold a team on average below 60 points. Robin Selvig was very successful over the years because of that. Holsinger appeared to be following Loree Payne's system over his time here. Unfortunately, Nate Harris has no way to correct that this year.

Lady Griz have the 3rd worst defense in the league giving up around 68 point a game. Offense is in the middle of the pack in the league. These two facts and NAU's offense, it's a wonder the Lady Griz stood a chance at coming close to beating NAU this year.

I do believe UM has a chance at making some damage. I think they have a good chance at winning all but maybe one. The one is of course the team located across the divide from us. But, I do not worry about their offense so much as for the defense. Came close to beating them before, only because of the Lady Griz's best defensive effort of the year and an offense that had one of the best games of the year, plus being energized by a home crowd. Next game will be on the road and the odds will be lower of winning. But, we can always hope.

Ed Zachary, 10 4 I agree

What I was trying to say was I agree with you we absolutely have to find some defense on a consistent basis and my God move the ball on offense get some people moving on offense standing around looking at the ball handler is ridiculous

The offense is getting more centered on getting the ball into Zingaro who positions herself at a point where they have to do a lob pass which is kind of difficult and always double teamed. Pass the ball to someone who then looks for a pass inside taking 2 or 3 seconds each time looking for Zingaro. Allows enough time for any team to cover the passing lanes forcing the ball carrier to dribble the ball somewhere else or look for someone else to pass it too. Eventually later in the shot clock they will look for the three or a different shot.

Luckily, Tyler has been shooting well, Waddington can create her own shot, and Zingaro when she gets the ball and can shoot it early enough scores at a high percentage, so Lady Griz's offense is still decent. Decent enough to still win if they played better defense. Lady Griz are averaging on offense that many of Robin Selvig's teams averaged and won because they could hold a team below 60 and under 40% shooting percentage.

This game is a perfect example of how important Dani is to this team. . Without her they take a huge hit in rebounding and defense plus she is the leader of the team. Let's hope she can come back soon or the Lady Griz are in trouble

Great analysis... As of today, Lady Griz sit in 5th Place by 1/2 game (As Weber has played one less Conference game than UM).. LG have 2 games against teams around them (Weber and EWU) both those on the road, and 1 game against MSU in Bozeman. IN MY OPINION the Lady Griz need to win 2 of those 3 games to secure at least a 4 seed... They are 2 games behind Idaho at 3rd, but lost to Idaho twice... Idaho though still has to play NAU and MSU at home, and EWU on road. So they could lose those 3 games... Lots of moving left, even though we are just 3 weeks till Boise.

Fun fact-- 2 games separate 1st and 2nd, and 2 games seperate 2nd and 3rd... But 3 games separate 3rd and 7th... with all those teams playing each other.

Idaho has been struggling lately. Lost to Sac so I don't know that any of their games are guaranteed wins at this point. I could see um getting up to 3rd if they win all but Cat/griz in Bozeman.

Weber State is playing better than they were predicted. With Dani questionable for that game and Aby Shubert also being questionable, beating Weber State on the road will be very tough.

Agreed... At 1st I was going to say the best Lady Griz could finish is 4th, but then I looked at the way Idaho had played, and who they still have to, and I think Lady Griz could get up to 3rd... NOW, does it matter being 3rd or 4th? Would Lady Griz rather face MSU or NAU in the Semifinals. I know it doesn't matter to the team, But I THINK (just my opinion) the fans would rather face MSU.

In a perfect world, we beat NAU in the semi finals, then Dani tips in the winning shot in the championship. Three birds in one week. Revenge for the NAU/kittens games in our house, new coach without having to look anywhere but on our own bench. Go Lady Griz. Icing on my cake, the men win the conference and the championship

Sorry. In a perfect world the women Bobcats go undefeated for the rest of the season. Get a 12 seed. And upset the team they play in the NCAA tournament. And then Bobcat men figure it out and win a 4th in a row Big Sky championship. That's a perfect world. Lol
