The University of Montana women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 76-43 victory over Sacramento State Thursday night at Dahlberg Arena. The Lady Griz, who will host the 2007 Big Sky Conference Women's Basketball Tournament next Thursday through Saturday, finished the regular season with a record of 27-2 and ended up 15-1 in league play.
The Hornets, who play at Idaho State Saturday afternoon in their season finale, dropped to 3-26, 1-14 in Big Sky play.
The 27 wins are the most ever by a Montana team for a regular season. The 1987-88 Lady Griz went 26-1 in the regular season on their way to a 28-2 season record. The 28 wins by that team are the program record for single-season victories.
Junior Laura Cote went 8-for-10 from the field in the victory for UM, matching her career high with 18 points.
Sophomore Mandy Morales, who added six assists and six rebounds, also scored 18 points.
Sophomore Britney Lohman went 6-for-8 from the field to add 15 points in 18 minutes of action.
Junior Johanna Closson scored nine points and finished with a team-high eight rebounds and a career-high five steals.
Montana, which held Sac State to 31.5 percent shooting, shot 51.9 percent from the field, its fifth game this season shooting better than 50 percent.
The Lady Griz out-rebounded their 14th straight opponent, finishing with a 43-25 advantage on the boards.
