The Lady Griz will face Florida Gulf Coast Saturday at 8:30 a.m. (MT) in the team's final game at Mexico.
Montana got 23 points and 11 rebounds from sophomore Katie Baker and 12 points and nine rebounds from sophomore Alyssa Smith.
James Madison got 24 points and eight rebounds from Dawn Evans, and Hamner came off the bench to hit five of her nine 3-point attempts.
Montana (2-3) took a 13-12 lead with 10:41 to play in the first half and stayed ahead until the Dukes (3-2), who were a No. 9 seed at last spring's NCAA tournament, tied it at 60 with just under two minutes remaining.
The Lady Griz missed an opportunity to win it in regulation when freshman Torry Hill's runner in the lane rolled off the rim with two seconds to play, and James Madison took control early in the overtime with a pair of Courtney Hamner 3-pointers in the opening 75 seconds.
"I watched (James Madison) yesterday when they coulda, woulda, shoulda beat (No. 20) Iowa, and I thought, If we can play with these guys, we've got a pretty good team. And we did play with them," UM coach Robin Selvig said.
"I was proud that we came out and had an outstanding chance to win the game. That would have been a great win."
