I went to the game & came back impressed with several individuals, but this was clearly a "scrimmage-type" outing where all but 3 players logged dougle-digit minutes. Some general impressions:
1. -- The game appeared to be a public relations disaster. Only 453 fans, and a lot of them angry, because of the $10 entry fee. I sat next to a fan who said he was caught off guard by the "sleazy" extra charge for loyal season tix holders. He said he told the ticket taker he was going in regardless, which he did. He said the ticket taker didn't confront him.
2. My first impression is that this team still has a long way to go defensively, but there's no doubt defense is a priority of coach Holsinger, who yanked the entire starting 5 less than a minute in the second half because of two-straight defensive breakdowns.
3. Despite a height advantage and a 48-30 rebounding edge, and 4 bigs under the basket, guard MJ Bruno was the dominant rebounder by position, scrappiness and numbers... leading the team with 7 boards. I did not realize until late that Keeli Burton-Oliver didn't play & that I didn't notice her on the bench. A big question mark. Does anyone have inside info?
4. I agree... the starting lineup was a bit of a surprise, but Bruno (who started) plays with high energy and intensity, especially defensively and rebounding. She's willing to mix it up with anyone.
5. Key Players: Espenmiller-McGraw was the most impressive Griz overall. She shot 6-9 from the floor, at least four of them treys. She's a finesse player, has an exceptionally quick trigger, and good floor vision. Carmen Gfeller looks 100% healthy, played a solid all-around game, and has clearly worked on her dribbling. Dani Bartsch played her classic game... a disrupter on D and always looking for her team mates on O: 6 rebounds and four excellent assists... but a hesitancy to shoot. Mack Konig (7 pts) and Gina Marxen (8 pts) will likely rotate at point guard and both are very solid. Marxen, despite her size, is a better defender, but both ran the team well and knocked shots down when defenders sagged on them. Libby Stump belongs here, but had an off-night shooting (3-9 for 7 points). Regardless, her ball handling skills have clearly improved and she notched 4 assists in the key.
6. Not sure yet... Backup posts Alex Pirog and Imogen Greenslade should both play plenty of minutes this season, but both seem to be fitting into their roles. Pirog is Stronger but both were out of position frequently on defensive rebounding. Six total rebounds between the two... outrebounded by Bruno alone with 7. Pirog is a good passer (3 assists) and I think will be valuable at high post offense and so, possibly has an edge over Greenslade at this point.
7. Future (perhaps near future) stars. Everything said... frosh Macey Huard and Adria Lincoln will have a growing impact on this team with every minute they play. They're clearly reserves, but both had dynamic impact when they were on the floor. Huard seems more floor ready as a frosh, played 14 minutes, scored 14 points (6-10) had 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal for a bucket. Lincoln has exceptional ball-handling skills, scored 10 points, had 4 rebounds and gave every indication she loves to mix it up with anyone on the floor.
8. Lastly, Draya Wacker played only 6 minutes but gave flashes of brilliance, scoring 5 points (2/2) while grabbing 2 rebounds. Haley Huard played 10 minutes and scored 2 points on a flashy assist from her younger sister. Cool.
My final impressions are that this team needs some time, but the sky's the limit. Espenmiller-McGraw, Bruno could have a huge mimact on this team's success. Gfeller looks ready to resume the role she had two years ago. And the rotation mix (and possibilities) of Konig, Stump, Marxen and Bruno give this team quickness on O and D that, I believe (I hope), could elevate this team competitively by the start of conference. It may take some time, but I think the dynamics of this team could really elevate after they play some of the very tough D1 opponents they will soon face. Go Griz.
