Let's look at some stats....

Just for grins I've been looking at stats and have a few ideas what they tell us about the Griz this year. Be interested in what other folks glean from them. I'm going to use conference numbers except for a couple stats that rank teams nationally and a couple from last year to illustrate a couple takeaways I have.

For 18 games: FG% G .505, Opp .431 / 3 FG% G .408, Op .348 / FT% G .751, Op .724 / FT attempts G 257, Op 410 / Reb G 547, Op 579 / Assists G 242, Op 167 / TOs G 192, Op 253 / PFs G 360, OP 290 / PPG G 74.3, OP 66.6.

First off is it's remarkable for a primarily jump shooting team to shoot that percentage. In all games the .473 FG and .364 3% rank 18th and 43rd nationaliy. Pretty amazing.

Rebounds are pretty even overall though we give up a couple more O boards per game than opponents. Partly explained by our lack of size and less chances because the Griz shoot well.

Free throws are where it gets interesting. Despite some teeth gnashing the FT% is pretty decent, slightly lower than conference overall at .725, 118th in the country so just about the top third. That brings us to attempts which are virtually identical per game in and out of conference at 14.6 us and 22.6 bad guys. 8 a game is huge. 331st nationally in attempts and 306th in attempts allowed. Ouch. Last year we shot 4 more FTs per game. The big difference was Mike and Akoh who shot 11 FTs per game by themselves versus 14.5 for the whole squad now. A slasher and power post. A good share of our close in scoring this year is Samuelson who scores with baby hooks and fadeaways or Pridgett who is so good at slipping by guys and avoiding contact that he often doesn't get calls when there is glancing contact. The both only get 4 FTs average a game this year between them.

Opponents draw 4 more fouls a game than the Griz. Factor 1 to me is lack of post size, either bulk or length or both. If the opponent has a scoring post and the rest of the D doesn't do a good job of denying that post up pass we are vulnerable to a n easy score or a foul. Plus inexperience. Fouls per 40 minutes is instructive: DJ 5.4, Kyle 6.0, Eddy 6.6 and Mac 8.8. Vasquez is the lone non fouling machine of the youth at 2.2. Throw in Samuelson trying to guard bigger guys at 4.5 and aggressive Timmy at 4.6 and there you go.

Seems to me the staff and team have done a great job taking advantage of their strengths and minimizing their weaknesses to be where they are in the standings. But if they don't get those extra possessions from turnover margin and taking care of the ball or have a bad shooting night they are vulnerable to most any team the rest of the way. How great and consistent have the seniors been? Expected Pridgett to get it done but Manuel has been incredible almost every game and Samuelson holding down the post while undersized and often hobbled has ben a yeoman effort. Really hope they get to go Dancing for how they have carried the young guys. Will be interested in other observations and in my seat tomorrow night. Go Griz.

Forgot to include TOs which we have 3 and a half less per game and plus 3 on assists. Ball security is key given our other weaknesses.

Very instructive indeed. The differential in foul shooting attempts is particularly interesting, and I agree with your reasoning. First, the Griz do not have a dominate slasher, or a lot of guys who drive to the basket. But inexperience is also a big factor: Our young players have not learned how to cheat the rules by “drawing the foul.” Yes, I know the rules favor the offense, but “smart” players push it more than that.

In fact, “bitterly ironic” is how I would describe the phrase “draw the foul.” Saw two blatant examples in games yesterday, where the camera angle was just right. Scenario: Man with the ball drives, defender moves parallel with him, both headed for the basket. Driver leaps sideways into the defender … foul on defender. I emphasize the sideways direction, because it was clear the driver was not taking a more direct line to the basket, he deliberately made contact to “draw the foul.” Happens all the time and hardly ever called on the driver. Our young guys need to be coached up on the technique.

The other interesting stat was the 242 to 167 plus in assists for the Griz. Ball movement is key to the Griz offense, and this shows how good they are at it.

Great stats. Great info....NAU game is a microcosm of our FT issues (with regards to # of attempts, not success rate)...Griz just don't get the love under the hoop other teams do.

And conversely (especially the last few years) have been more harshly penalized on defense (at least in the games I've seen).

Great post, HW.

If you looked at those numbers without including FT attempts, it would be very easy to imagine the GRIZ hadn't lost a conference game. But that stat is just so freakin ridiculous it damn near cancels out everything else.

Timmy is the poster child for this. The guy gets called for more hand checks 35 feet from the hoop than any player I've ever seen.
