Let's Get Real: Beating the Wolfpack Would be a Huge Upset

We don't have anybody who can match up with Fazekas. Strait could get into foul trouble early. The Pack will score a lot of points.

Our only hope is if our shots are dropping. We have eight guys who can shoot threes. At least 4-5 of them will need to be hot for us to have a chance.

I don’t care what anybody says, Bryan Ellis is one of the quickest players in college basketball. With Ellis on the court, our (other) 3-point shooters are going to get some looks.

Will the shots fall for the Griz? Only the basketball gods know the answer…

I was thinking the same thing. One tactic is to try to get Fazekas off of his game early with some really physical play. You don't want Strait taking early fouls so maybe you have someone else more expendable (if you will) take him early. Good scorers usually find a way to get back in it but the longer he has to work against tough play the better chance you have that he may struggle. Of course you double down after the entry pass and try to make them score outside. Unfortunately Nevada is not one dimensional but anytime you can identify a key player you have to do what you can to force his team mates to beat you. You then hope that no one in particular steps up. Honestly anyone looking at the match-ups has to realize this will be a very tough game to win though definitely short of impossible.

Another key player, and this is IMO and I don't even know if I can statistically support this, is Jordan Hasquet. When Jordan has a big game (usually in big-time matchups) the Griz win. Look at Stanford and two of the NAU games as an example. Hopefully he'll continue his recent hot streak, could be the difference in this game.

As for defending underneath I would think coach K will do what he did to slow down Boykin (and a bunch of other big men this year and last year) and make them chase the guy they're gaurding the whole game. Rotate Strait, Chavez, Hasquet and Dlhouy and have those guys running to wear down Nevada's center & inside D.

I think everyone know a Griz win would be an upset...i think the seeding #s make that very clear.

but its not like we're playing the UNLV team from back in the day, that we at least hung with for a half.

its very possible, so what if it would be a huge upset.

I do not know who it helps but those hour TV time outs during the NCAA games change the entire season. I do not see them as an advantage to MT because we do better later in each half and that is where are depth and conditioning pay off. With the long time outs the bench can be pretty shallow.

I don't think they help anyone except CBS and the NCAA who are the beneficiaries finacially. I think it is just a matter of luck if they come at a time when you need a timeout and get to save one of yours as a result.

How about we not "Get Real", it's March our boys are in the Big Dance and are looking like a Cinderella story in the making. I'm not reigning in my excitement any time soon!

We know we can win this game, last year Krysko was saying things like "the only way Washington could lose this game is if they didn't show up" Now he's talking about getting a win and moving further in the tournament. He knows we can win and he likes being an underdog.

Bring on Boston College!

Definitely not the time to use my normal line of "Do it and then talk about it" being an underdog allows one to have their cake and talk it also. Of course you have to like Pacific's chances. Bring on those happy tigers.

Given our seeding in past tournaments, you can't help but feel like we have a reasonable chance in this game. The 12 seed has also been the magic seed in the past for upsets. I really think the Griz will be in this game from start to finish. I won't put money on a victory, but I think its foolish to expect nothing but a great effort.

There are far more upsets in basketball than in football. THe Griz beating Nevada would be low on the rankings of major upsets in basketball. some of them:

First-Round Shockers
Teams seeded 13th or lower in the NCAA Tournament have been first-round "giant killers" 36 times in the past 20 years, or since the field was expanded to 64 teams. Of those surprises, 27 were decided by fewer than 6 points or in overtime.

Year Winner (Seed) Loser (Seed) Score
2005 Bucknell (14) Kansas (3) 64-53
2005 Vermont (13) Syracuse (4) 60-57
2003 Tulsa (13) Dayton (4) 84-71
2002 UNC-Wilmington (13) USC (4) 93-89 OT

1986 Ark.-Little Rock (14) Notre Dame (3) 90-83
1985 Navy (13) Louisiana State (4) 78-55

When you double down on Fazekas after the entry pass, he will pass out of them or make a quick move to the basket.

When he passes out, our guards will take a quick 3 if it is there. If they make 35-40% of those the Pack will win. If the are off, then it will be a long night, ie the 2nd La Tech game.

If the griz were not playing Nevada I would be cheering for you, like last year.

Griz should go zone;try to minimize big guy. Push the ball up the floor-gotta make the shots. Virgil, Hasquet, others have to have a
game. I would say a team that beat stanford, oral roberts, and
loyola marymont is quite capable.

A Griz win would be big, not huge. The two teams are not that far apart in talent.

Let's take a look at the facts: NV is ranked # 21 in the nation for a reason. NV has beaten Gonzaga, Mich. St & Texas in the past two NCAA's. NV has been knocked out of the last two NCAA's by the tourney runner up.
NV is led by a Jr forward who is projected to be an NBA 1st round pick. The # 2 guy(soph Kemp) will likely also be an NBA player. NV regularly plays 8 guys. The #9 guy is 7'1". The number 10 guy is a juco transfer who can drain 3's with his eyes closed.

Most of us in Reno are very happy for you guys getting a 12 seed. It's about time your team & conf got some respect. We wish you con't success.

You guys have a shot at an upset, but to say the two teams are not that far apart talent wise is laughable.
