Let's Admit It: We Don't Have the Horses to Get it Done

Interesting stats on CET in conference. I knew he'd improved on those things, but didn't realize it was by that much.

I don't worry about next year's team, in large part because of the addition of McGillis and Taylor. Those two guys are good and will play hard the whole game. Their competitiveness will be infectious. I think we may see Stockton too. He's also a gamer.

The griz have speed and athleticism compared to Tech and Western, I'll agree. It's not like these guys aren't great athletes. It's just that they are not fast and athletic compared to the teams with which UM aspires to be considered equal. Compound that fact with the fact that UM tries to play "normal" basketball despite its lack of speed and athleticism, and you've got a problem.

You gotta get creative as a coach; look at what coach K is doing this year....

Coach K (who I like) is mostly losing. I think he will eventually be successful with the Bucks, but no big turnaround this year.

Do you really think coach K would have found this teams lack of hustle on D acceptable? I don't and I can't get rid of this feeling in the pit of my stomach that Griz b-ball is falling back into obscurity. :twocents:

I don't find UM to have a problem with consistent lack of hustle on defense.

UM is second in the conference in scoring defense, less than a point behind Weber. The PSU game caused UM to drop to 2nd.

Sorry, should have been more clear: I meant Coach K as in Coach Mike Kryzezewski who is mostly winning without the traditional "big man" by hoisting it up from everywhere. A highly creative and adaptive approach that should probably be employed by more NCAA teams. I figure that if the Griz would charge their better shooters with the task of shooting a ton of threes, they could average around 35-40%. If they live and die by the three at 35%, lord knows they would probably have won some games they did not and lose some games they did not. However, if a team were to replace 25 two point shots (shot at 47% like UM) per game with 25 three point shots per game (extending the average of 38.5%) it would mean 5.5 more points per contest. This is not considering the fact that players in CBB seem much more likely to get on a roll shooting threes (when given more oppotunities) than they are twos. Why? Threes are shot almost exclusively by "shooters" while twos are shared with those who are not usually great shooters and not usually as likely to have a hot shooting night, even from 8-12 feet.

Now, this could obviously backfire with a cold shooting night. Also, the more threes a team shoots, the less it will get to the FT line, generally. When it did backfire, the Griz would surely lose. I, for one, think the net result would be positive though.

When you don't have the talent to play against people straight up, you gotta find different ways to win. If Duke tried to play traditional bball this year, they would surely have more losses. Bottom line: college guards can make threes, even the ones playing for the Griz. I say, turn 'em losse against team with which you do not matchup well. The worst that could happen is that you lose the game you were going to lose anyway....
