Let 'em Play!

For the love of all that is right and decent, dear God BSC, let 'em play tonight.

In the two semi games last night, a total of 97 fouls were called. A quick look at box scores around the nation showed a high of 45 fouls called in a game. That was the UConn/Cincinnati FOUR OVERTIME game.

That's ridiculous and makes the BSC games virtually unwatchable. As if we didn't have enough trouble already.....

Do you think after the the scuffle at the end of the last Griz/Wildcat game that the refs will call it close from the start?

If they do call it like that again we will be lucky to not have the game pulled from espnu. Nobody is gonna watch a 2 1/2 hour free throw competition with 200 fans in the stands

I don't think they can call them any tighter.

Ha! You're right; they'll switch to a replay of the ACC first round of the Lacrosse tournament.

This should be night of pure anticipation and joy if you're a fan of our basketball program, but it's all tainted by the grim reality that we're still in the Big Sky Conference. Which means a crappy venue and sparse attendance for a championship game. Terrible refs. Lousy TV (I have Comcast and ESPNU is not on Comcast in this market, and maybe not in any market.) And finally, a brutal first round game at the Big Dance if you do prevail in your tournament.

Yes, Weber State has a great basketball tradition, and a first-class basketball facility. And yes, Eastern Washington has grown into a worthy foe in both football and basketball. But let's not forget, Montana has been the dominant Big Sky program in all three major sports for many years now, both by record and by quality of our facilities, and has fully demonstrated that it deserves a better conference affiliation. Were it so tonight.

Griz fans would be better off not worrying about the venue, the crowds or the refs. This would be a great matchup in any league in any venue, so sit back and enjoy and hopefully, UM can let the guards do their thing, which, when in sync is fun to watch. The last four games have been pretty good basketball. I see a large number of freshman, sophs, and juniors that are very talented and in the next year and after will begin to remake the Big Sky into what it could be.

Half agree.

Yes, I will enjoy this game, for all the reasons you say. This is an excellent matchup, between the two most storied programs in this conference. And while I'm a staunch Griz fan, I do not hate on Weber, and even feel that with Bolomboy and Sengelin at a 15 seed, they will have a better chance for a win than we will as a 16th seed. And nothing would help the conference right now like a first-round win.

But no, you will never "remake" the Big Sky Conference into anything special, because you can't do anything special without money, which is to say, TV. Sure, you'll have your occasional Damien Lillard or Micheal Ray, and just maybe Hall at Montana State and Oguine at Montana are those players. But the facilities will remain subpar because of lack of money, and the minute a good coach comes into the league, he'll leave for more money, and TV will never arrive because small markets mean no money. As in all things American, you have to follow the money, but the money will never lead to the Big Sky.

Still--Go Griz!

Yes, I very much agree with the money aspect. However, what I am saying, poorly, is that the Big Sky could become a conference where, when a team clicks like UM did first half of the first half the other night, they can pull the surprise. I do remember the years Weber, UM, Idaho, and Idaho State were talked about in the same breath as UCLA and Carolina, which both fell to a BSC team. Can UM or any BSC team win the NCAA? NO, but they can do a lot of damage to those that can with the level of players coming into the league that have extra incentive to shine having been passed over by the "BIGS"..I think Cherry was one of those, and certainly, Oguine.
If there is no hope then maybe we should push for a move to Division 2. I like challenges and I think kids do, too.

LA, I think the point is that many GRIZ fans expect better from both the team AND the conference. I don't think it's out of line to expect BSC officiating to be at least on par with other conferences. And right now, it isn't even close. We simply cannot have our marque games mared by fifty whistles. As I said above, that is just flat out ridiculous.
