Given the abuse heaped on ST coach Arbuckle in the previous two years after every ST screw-up, I'm surprised that Burtnett has escaped criticism for the safety play.

Is this guy even on the coaching staff any more?

Arbuckle is retired. If that was your question, Constant Velocity Griz.

Does CV stand for Central Valley by chance?

Sorry! I was asking if Burnett was still on the staff? It was obviously a "weak" attempt at a joke. CV are my initials.

Yes, he is on staff as safeties coach.

Valid point but outside of Mike McCord last year safety play has been an issue. Stoll and Schillenger were good in 2009 but Stoll dropped off without Schann in 2010. Wilson filled in ok but it took half a season to get him ramped up.

Kind of sounds like an Obama excuse but one could argue that Burtnett somewhat inhertited this.

To answer your question Maroon and Silver, Yes Coach Burnett should be taking some "heat" over the poor safety play. But it is bigger than Burnett now. For what ever reason, Coach Delaney has decided to take a "public" position of supporting the starting safeties. Delaney starts out almost every press conference with"the safety play has improved along with the tackling". His intentions must be to deflect the flack from Burnett and the players. It is just a "tactic" employed" by some coaches. It sets a "tone" for the pending interview. Replay
Tuesday's radio show. Delaney actually said "that the tackling by the Griz was fine Baumann makes all defenses look bad".

Caught that too... Bauman is very talented, but still the tackling was downright awful.

Well, Delaney is answering the question about safeties before anyone has a chance to ask it, which would suggest he's already hearing about it before he gets to the press conference. He's aware of it.

Problem is, Delaney didn't assemble this staff and he's probably lucky coaches weren't abandoning ship left and right after both Pflugrad and the AD were fired. Think about where these guys were before Pflu hired them. Burtnett was on his way to retirement. Rosenbach wasn't in coaching. The coaches who were here for 2011 couldn't have been comfortable with their prospects, given the possibility of a new coach. Even now Delaney's time is up after two seasons.

I agree with you 100% on your comments about the coaching staff situation. Delaney is also a very talented interviewee. That "aw shucks" style serves him well. But make no mistake, he controls the interview by his advanced unsolicited comments about the Griz weaknesses. The interviewer knows beforehand what topics are sort of "off limits". Since Delaney has already thrown the issue out there and answered it, the host is stopped in his tracks and has to move on to another topic if he wants to avoid a confrontation.

I seem to remember an artcle about the safeties in August, in which Burtnett said the safeties needed a lot of improvement. It was either in the missoulian or on gogriz.
