LBs in 2014

Who's starting at LB next season?

I see Connor Lebsock starting but im not familiar with the depth at that position.

Also do we have any studly recruits to help out our struggling defensive backfield? Who do you think will be the next Colt Anderson, Tru Johnson. Goodwin had a good year but wasnt quite the shut down corner like Tru was IMO. Was Chief a senior this season? I sure hope not he was our best CB this year however mediocre he seemed to my arm chair coaching.

P.S. I am very critical of this team simply because I think we have the talent to make deep playoff runs year in and year out. So i just want to say great season Griz! You guys did a fantastic job putting this freight train back on track.

Lebsock, Addison Owen, Kose, and Van Ackeren are all returning. I also expect Schye and Strahm to contribute mightily at LB as well.

Goodwin was a senior. His efforts will be missed but I'm also excited about the likes of McKinley, Russell, and Parker, coupled with the experience we have with Harris, Nelson and Dennard.

Expect good things from Kelsey Lippert as well...He will be a junior this season...

Coyle will be toughest to replace. Aside from Kose, who seems to be an injury waiting to happen, I don't see a natural MLB in the group. Really good prospects for the outside, but smallish and short of muscle for the inside.

true, coyle will be the biggest loss, honestly, did we see any LB play this year; that are reserves?

If Kose can return strong that would be incredible. I think that actually would give a good mix of rotation to the backer corps with Kose, Van Ackeren, Schye, Lebsock, Owen, Strahm, and Lippert. All 7 could play a ton.

Save Kose and Schye the rest played safety in high school and a few even came in to play safety in college (Van Ackeren, Lebsock, and Owen). In theory that will make this group potentially better in pass coverage than the outgoing group. Of course that will come at the expense of rush defense. Under Tripp/Coyle/Kanongata'a the linebackers were pretty darn good overall in rush defense but you'd see issues at times in pass coverage. That could flip in 2014.

Considering that the 2013 LB core was one of the best in recent memory, I'd say that there is a good chance that the level of play drops off in 2014. This new group has potential for down
the road but they will take time to develop. We'll see.

Sorry, I know this keeps coming up, and maybe it's just me who can't keep it straight (don't ask my ex-wife!). Gamboa is back at safety? Maybe in at LB for a nickel or god forbid a dime package? Thanks! I promise to write it down this time.

Agreed

Well since the Big Sky is such a pass heavy conference...maybe its better to have a good pass coverage group of linebackers...no one really lines up and pounds it in the big sky.

Poly, NAU, SUU, PSU. Some do, but you're right most are either balanced or more pass heavy.

Would have been nice to have Brian Maus next season. He was a beast. Not sure if he was dismissed from the team or quit, but he's now a member of the Griz' track team. I think he would have been an excellent linebacker by 2014 had he chosen to really devote himself 100 percent to being a member of the Griz' football team, which he didn't.

lippert kid should be a force next year. i think ryan leaf is his cousin.

Correct you are! His grandpa's brother is ryan leafs grandpa.
Kelsey suffered much of this season with turf toe. Hopefully next season he will be healthy...
