Mslacat or anyone, is it me or do you all think Tinkle has drastically changed the type of players the GRIZ look for? It appears to me Tinkle is looking for a lot more athleticism than prior GRIZ coaches. It looks like he is sacrificing specialty players like pure shooters and rebounders in favor of more versatility. Basically players that play multiple positions, and do not one thing excellent, but do everything well.

I like that we are becoming more athletic, but kind of wonder what we will do for glass cleaners and pure shooting threats? Of our rotational players, we have 2 that are pure position players. Staudacher is true pure shooting guard, and Qvale is pure rebounding shotblocking big. Tinkle has indicated that both are expected to add to their overall games. Which to be honest with you, I agree with Tinkle about both. Stauds is expected to add penetration and shot creating to his game. It is frustrating that a great FT shooter like Stauds never gets to the line.

Qvale has been an offensive "project" his whole time here so far. BTW, his offense was much improved by season's end this past year. His biggest offensive liability has been consistent touch. The moves have not been bad, but the shot execution has hurt him. On the other hand Qvale is a great shotblocker, defender, and just needs to learn to secure the ball on rebounding.

Will these 2 players be the last 2 true position players we see under Tinkle? I hope not because teams need all different kinds of players for matchups. I feel teams should at least try recruiting true PGS and true shotblocking and rebounders. As for the wing players (SG/SF), I am all for recruiting the all around players.

I realized that Stockton is close to fitting a true position as PG, but then again from what I have heard and seen the GRIZ want him to become more versatile too.

What do all you think as to what Tinkle is trying to accomplish with personnel by recruiting? I think he is more on building an athlete into a player. After all you cannot build a player into an athlete.

Already done mslacat. My God that team has a lot of 6'4" to 6'6" wings.

I wish my friends would just name drop. They never have though.

Keep an eye on Steve McLellan from the team. I am told he could be a guy the Griz are looking at. He is more of a very athletic combo forward. Can shoot out to to about 15-18 feet or drive the lane. Very athletic 6-6 to 6-7 ish. A lot of schools are looking at him including Weber State.

Also keep an eye out for 6-8 power forward Will Davis also from the Bay Area Hoosiers, I hear the Griz are also looking at him.

Damon Powel has signed with Southern Idaho. He will have to spend two years at the JC level before he will be able to move on.

Damon Powell won a appeal with the NCAA clearing house and is was declared eligible to play D-1 basketball. He just recently signed with Fresno State.

How the basketball turns.

Damon Powell, chose not to attend Fresno State. I do not know the whole story, but he will be attending Los Mendanos (junior) College in Northern California. If he was approved by the NCAA clearing house he will be eligible to sign with a D-1 school after this season. If not he will have to spend two years at the JC level, and get his associate degree before becoming D-1 eligible.

City nailed this one. Very good report, and seemingly very accurate. One improvement, besides shooting, is that Cherry doesn't take off any plays now. Even if he gets hammered on a drive, but doesn't get the call, he's the first one down the court. He doesn't sulk. He doesn't hesitate in those situations. I love watching him play.

If anything, him being taken down, or pushed around, motivates him to take his game higher. Will is a Bulldog. :thumb:

Up until the last couple years Tinkle used a deliberate set offense you could watch paint dry by - or just plain nod off, but he was doing what any good coach does. He was running an offense that matched the bunch of realtively slow-footed white bread players he had. Superior recruiting has brought key big city ball-savy race horses to the Adams Center. He finally has the talent to run the face break ball that fans will turn out to watch. It is what it is and the recent success recruiting of California is its own proof.
