Last Night's Game

So I was watching last night's game waiting for VA Tech to roll BC and show that BC is HIGHLY overrated. Watching VT control the entire game (minus the last 4:41), still makes me think BC is overrated. I think last night's game is one of the BEST examples as to how a prevent defense prevents you from winning the game.

Matt Ryan is a good QB, I won't take that away from him. But a Heisman QB? I just can't see that. He had 138 yards (give or take) the entire game with 2 INT's, but racked up 157 (give or take) on the last two scoring drives with two TD's. He was 25 for 52, less than 50% completions overall. Both drives were very impressive, but why the hell did VT just drop back and let a good QB pick them apart. They rushed 3-4 guys both drives, and played a zone with a good 10-15 yard cushion. VT needed to keep putting pressure on Ryan those last two drives, as well as keep playing man coverage, just let an extra safety drop back.

One huge difference between college and pro ball is that pro teams don't let up near as much as college teams do in the last few minutes of the game. Pro teams keep pressure, try to keep a couple man to man matchups, and that's why the comebacks are less likely.

Any thoughts on the game? Is Matt Ryan overrated, or is he really that good and VT's defense just absolutely amazing and got beat by an absolutely amazing QB? I think Tim Tebow and Andre Woodsen have proved over a few games they are much better QB's than Ryan.

I think VT had a good game plan and really concentrated on him - coupled with the slick field and ball and fans and hoopla, their gameplan worked for most of the game. But I think you are right - VT got complacent, figured they had it in the bag and forgot who they were playing and what that #2 rating might mean in terms of what BC was capable of. Plus VT defense looked tired towards the end...any pressure they were trying to put on Ryan was half-assed...he just rolled out at will and made some big time passes. In the last 2 minutes Ryan proved he could make some things happen and the end of the game was impressive. However, that was the first time I've seen Boston College this year and up until the last 2 minutes and 11 seconds...I too was wondering what all the hype was about. With as badly as VT got beat by LSU - I think BC has yet to prove themselves. And Matt Ryan too.

Right on #15. VT gave that one away by backing off in the last 5 minutes. BC could do nothing up to that point. What gives? I was damn near as pissed at VT as I get at Griz games when we "prevent". F'ing stupid!!!! I don't understand how any halfway intelligent individual can say to them selves...in a game....Oh...we won the first three and a half quarters...that should do it. Let's see how much we can give up...give them a glimmer of hope. Unreal. And for the special teams to give up the onside kick....ugh...are you kidding me??? They just gave it away and made Ryan look like something I don't think he is :twocents:

I just went to ESPN.com and they had a poll: if you had to choose the Heisman right now, who would it be?

Matt Ryan = 34%
Tim Tebow = 27%
Andre Woodsen = 21%
Dennis Dixon = 16%

Matt Ryan had a VERY impressive 4:41, but an absolutely horrible 55:19. How the hell can anyone say he's that good? Because BC is undefeated, beating up on no-name teams, BARELY surviving UMass? This is why I wish 1-A would get a playoff bracket. BC would be out the first game, and everyone would see them as a truly overrated team. Oh well, thank God we have our 1-AA and Griz!

I'm kinda hoping FSU upsets them at home. They have an impressive defense, and I think if Xavier Lee shows up, they could pull out a huge upset. Just depends on which FSU team shows up next week.

Hawaii is just going to get killed in New Orleans this year.

You really think Hawaii will get past Fresno State, Nevada, and Boise State? Then win at home against Washington? Hawaii won't be able to finish the season undefeated, just no way.

I stoped being serious about 3 years ago. KU and Hawaii for all the marbles baby.

Wow, you sound like me picking UConn to win the Big East. Hey, they're alone at the top right now...

So did we give you a ton of crap when you picked that at the beginning? Im sure we did, but I wasn't sure. either way, Im atop the cfbpickem for our league, so until you can surpass me, you're both still my bitches!

And hawaii going undefeated... it could happen. I think their toughest game will be Washington, but they do have them at home along with BSU. I think they'll roll BSU that's given up 98 points in their last 2 games... defense sucks. Fresno St will be tough too, but their defense allows quite a few points too.

Yeah, I can see it happening... along with UCONN rolling the Big East. I think they have a great chance agaist S. Florida as that game will decide the Big East champ. Rutgers is too inconsistent to make a solid stand. They'll lose another one.

Ryan does seem to have some mobility and ability to throw on the run. That being said I agree with your assessment. VT got caught with their pants down trying to not lose the game. How many times have we seen it in the past. One constant remains... as a general rule history tends to repeat itself!
