I really can't do any better than a guess at where the money goes, but my first feeling would be: FOOTBALL. Next guess: FOOTBALL. Plain and simple: I can't think of any small, public schools in UM's position that can sustain a Football program like ours, and a bball program like Gonzaga's. The head count and alumni aren't what they are in power conference schools who can afford to be great in multiple sports.

Also, don't forget this fact: UM=public; Pepperdine=private. Public Universities in UM's class simply cannot command the tuition that private universities can.
