Larry Pretty Weasel

Spanky

Well-known member
I had a nice visit with Larry in Crow Agency a couple days ago. He is doing well, serves as an adviser to the Crow tribe and runs several horses, so he is staying busy. I promised a poster on this board I would ask Larry if he was the person he met in Missoula that the university wouldn't allow him to practice on their courts. Larry said that it wasn't him . I couldn't find the poster's name so I hope he gets this message. Some of you may be asking why I am posting about Larry Pretty Weasel? The answer is he is the greatest basketball player in the history of Montana basketball, not to mention a fine individual and credit to Montana athletics.

Saw him play when he was at Rocky. He was something special. Glad he is doing well. Thanks for the report.

Spanky, I think you're referring to me. It's been some time ago, but I believe I did ask you to check with Larry. Thank you. I'm glad that the person I talked to on the street was not Larry because my image of him would have been tarnished.

Thanks for the continuing reports, Spanky. As I have said before, my dad took me to watch LPW play a time or two. I don't really have recollecitons of seeing him play, but LPW was a huge name in my childhood--as my dad, uncle and other former athletes, both Native American and Anglo, thought LPW was the greatest MT high school player of their lifetimes. Ira Hayes, who was not from MT, was also a huge name in my childhood, and one of my heroes. Also Benny Reynolds, who was from MT.

Player, I recall your comments about Larry and watching him play with your father. Good memories. I don't remember Ira Hayes, but I certainly do Benny Reynolds. I knew several of the Small family, great Cheyenne rodeo competitors.
I was in Crow again today, but didn't see Larry.

Good memory. Ira Hayes wasn't from Montana. He was the Native American in the group that raised the flag at Iwo Jima. My dad and uncle were in the army during WWII, and my uncle was at Iwo Jima. Ira Hayes was a big hero to them, and me, and probably to most Native Americans at the time, including LPW. He's been the subject of songs and movies. He didn't live long in life. I believe he's buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
