Largest single year enrollment increase since 09

Have you guys added any majors recently?

And does anyone rememeber what majors he cut those first couple years?
If I recall there were cuts to Foreign Language majors, but likely only those who were in cut programs would know.
UM will offer an Occupational Therapy degree starting next year and a PA degree in 2026, both of which are high demand healthcare fields.

does anyone know the retention rate from year to year?
“UM’s student retention rate is 74.8% this fall, remaining near an all-time high. This figure measures the rate that students persist between their first and second year at UM. Since taking over as president in 2018, Bodnar helped raise the student retention significantly.”

It is amazing what actually reading the press release can do!

I thought there already was a PA degree? I must be thinking of something else. Is there a PT degree already?

They have added quite a few in-demand programs over the last several years!
In addition to the new OT and PA programs mentioned above, they have also added new undergraduate programs in Public Health (2020), Cybersecurity (2023), and Criminology (2023), and Computational Biochemistry.
They've also continued to strengthen their pre-professional programs, with pre-law and pre-medical acceptance rates far exceeding national averages–including admission to top programs in medicine and law.

Some of the programs that were initially cut were actually consolidated into other departments. Mostly languages. So rather than getting a B.A. in Spanish and having an entirely separate Spanish department, students can earn a B.A. in World Languages and Cultures. Some of these consolidations were related to costs of maintaining whole departments for few students, and other consolidations were about building stronger cross-campus connections and improving marketability of the degree.

It's not super surprising that this period of growth has paralleled recent successes on and off the field. I remember watching the playoff game against Delaware last year on ESPN (I believe it was the only college football game on ESPN that night), and they had some awesome shots of Missoula, the stadium, and the student section. The commentators said something along the lines of "The whole town is empty because everyone is here." when they showed a shot of the snow falling on an empty Higgins Ave. Another shot later showed one of the commentators in with the students in the student section, and everyone was super hyped up about the game.

Students, alumni, and community members want to be part of the excitement. It will be interesting to see if this period of growth continues–especially with all the new STEM degree options–and whether this growth parallels continued success on the field and on the courts. It's a pretty exciting time to be a Grizzly.
