Lady Griz

LA, it is fine if you want to sit back sipping your martini, but the constant complaining about everything that is wrong with Griz athletics gets old. I get that people want more, but sometimes you need to take a look at the big picture and realize where Griz athletics really stand in the grand scheme of things. Everyone likes to talk about Gonzaga, but UM is not Gonzaga and it never will be.

So let me post something positive here.
It appears the Lady Griz have a potentially outstanding young backcourt, with Taylor Goligoski, Gabi Harrington and Madi Schoening. Goligoski was Montana's Gatorade Player of the Year, and Harrington was Idaho's 4A Player of the Year, while Schoening broke her school's scoring record. In the opening game against Northern, Goligowski scored 16, Harrington 11 in eight minutes, while Schoening grabbed seven rebounds from the guard position. Impressive opening game stats for three freshmen.

Like watching the ever so slow Lady Griz?

No, like listening to your pathetic, adolescent whining. Trying to get an early start on that, this year, are you? It usually doesn’t begin until the first time the men’s team is behind somebody by ten points, at which point you announce with your usual incisive and insightful commentary in precisely the following words, over and over again, that, “They’re just not very good this year.” You then intimate with an implied sob that you’re now going to bed with a cookie and that we won’t be seeing you again. Unfortunately, that threat is never followed through on.

I’ve lived in large cities, in tiny towns and in places like Missoula. With unimportant exceptions, the only difference between a place like Zootown and a larger city is that there are more carbon copies of the same carbon copy shit in the larger cities. If you need the input of external things to the extent that you seem to need them, then that sorry vacuum is your problem, not ours. Culture in our age is digitized and available to all. There is more than enough of it to balance your lives without the “crush” of the mob to feed your herd instincts. I’ve never seen the imaginary inferiority complex that Montana people supposedly have. They are realistic about not having the increasingly vulgarized, billion dollar sports teams, for example, but that does not remotely translate into some kind of generalized sense of inferiority.

I won't make the argument that LA isn't a Griz fan. But I, too, get tired of the constant negativity. I'm certainly not afraid to call out the negatives when deserved (hell, check any game thread and you'll get your fill of it from me). But to FB's point, when every post is negative, they just get tiresome and consequently lack value and worth.

And you won't see them play one game, will you?!

I for one fully appreciate LAGriz's "negativity."

And as to recruiting black athletes to our women's program, I would point out the incredible contributions that black athletes have made to the men's program. Without any lists in front of me, just off the top of my head, a few names:

--Ray Howard and Zip Rhoades, the heart of the "Fabulous Frosh;"
--Ray Lucien, all-conference when Montana played in the Skyline Conference;
--Micheal Ray Richardson, surely our best player ever;
--Derrick Pope (enough said);
--Travis DeCuire: All-time assists leader (but what happened to him?);
--Dan Trammel: Rebound jam v Montana State put us in the NCAA tournament;
--Shane Christiansen: Only Montana player to play for the Trotters;
--David Bell: Incredible three-point shooter;
--Will Cherry and Kareem Jamaar: Led us to several NCAA appearances.

This board will quickly fill in dozens and dozens more.

Just askin': Why can't we have a similar list for the Lady Griz? Is that asking too much?

And what have they really brought the Griz that the all white blonde haired girls that Selvig seemed to be most comfortable with brought the Lady Griz?

1. Lady Griz still have more NCAA wins - 6 to 2. The Lady Griz were just as slow then as they are now. they just haven't sped with many of the larger schools did later on.

2. Lady Griz white, blonde haired girl have more ncaa tournament appearances than the Griz.

3. Lady Griz white players actually came closer to winning a ncaa tournament than the Griz have since 2010. It likely goes back a little further than 2010, but gogriz.com sucks with anything beyond 2010.

4. The Griz do have the last NCAA tournament win but that is getting somewhat dated. Just maybe Krysko is the best coach for the Griz ever.

Anyway, I am not trying to convince you two to change your minds because the opinions everybody has is their own, and people shouldn't be calling them idiots for them. I actually agree with many of the things both lagriz and citay have but just not some of the reasons for those opinions.

Anyway, if the Lady Griz are to actually be able to recruit black players, Shannon will likely have to hire a black assistant coach. the Griz coaching staff is mostly black and the roster kind of turned blacker with it in the past few years. but, still black players do not guarantee better players. Plus, I do believe attendance for Lady Griz is where it is at is because most players are from Montana. this isn't necessary the case with mens basketball.

Well Fat Bruno, don't know where you listen but a normal person would ignore things that upset them as much as I seem to upset you and the Helenaguy.....as they say hea'uh ubouts, y'awl got issues.

Where I live now, I am in a minority of 43% and love the experience. In fact, the high school girls' teams are predominantly direct descendants of the slaves who remained after the Civil War and whose parents are successful in many ways. They aspire to play in Columbia, but Orangeburg, Charleston, and others get their share of local talent. More than one parent, when seeing my Griz tee shirt, has remarked they wish their kids could experience a place like Montana. I, personally feel that the Orangeburg/Aiken/Augusta area of South Carolina might be fruitful recruiting country for UM. The mountains should not limit your vision, as my parents once said to me. And, they were right.

Yo, True:
Points well taken.
My counterpoint is, yes, the Lady Griz were very good in the early years of women's basketball, before the major schools saw the revenue potential and caught up. The men beat Nevada in 2006, and nearly beat New Mexico in 2010. The Lady Griz to the best of my knowledge have not won an NCAA game since they beat Wisconsin at Wisconsin in Shannon's senior year, roughly 1991, or 25 years ago.
The women also had an advantage the men didn't, that in the early years they were able to host a first round game. Didn't Sheryl Swoopes play in Missoula in a first-round game, circa the Skyla Sisco era?
Look, I'm just not backing down from my position. I have the stats, the history, the circumstantial evidence to support my point of view that black athletes excel at basketball! To not recruit black athletes is like saying I am going to recruit top scientists for our space program but I'm not going to the Ivy League. C'mon!
P.S. I stand corrected. The Lady Griz beat San Diego State in 1994-1995 in San Diego, then lost a tough game to Purdue for the right to advance. I believe Skyla Sisco was a freshman then.

Jesus! Do you ever spout anything that's not horse shit? If a normal person were as chronically, perennially, blubberingly upset by a BB team's failure to provide them with the vicarious thrills they feel as ridiculously entitled to as you constantly do, they'd find another team to watch and quit subjecting everyone to their insight free, whining generalizations. Knowledgeable criticism is one thing; the same old crybaby act over and over is something else. You and Citay have told us you don't watch the women's team, yet you somehow feel the pressing need to tell those of us who do watch them all about your chronic, butt hurt reaction to them with exactly the same, repetitive parrot squawk again and again til everyone is sick of it. If you can't stop crying, at least learn a few new chords to blubber in. Or find a team you like to watch and shut the fuck up.

Once again, don't read it if you have such a problem with me. Personally, I don't give a damn but you seem to be one very screwed up "fan", which is short for fanatic....appropriate.

I have been reading all the post about the Lady Griz and there lack of going after black players. I know for a fact there was some very very good young black/native american ladies at the Lady Griz camps and no one from the coaching staff is trying to get these young ladies. To me it really seems that there is some mommy ball been played here if you know what I mean. In case you don't these young ladies are all around better basketball players than her kids.

3/5 of their starting lineup is out, and they're almost all frosh. They played pretty well in almost all aspects, but could not hit a shot.

There are a lot of promising signs on this very young team. This is going to be a full-season development for the program, but the early signs of a tough defensive squad are already showing. I frankly think the poor shooting amounts to the pressure they're putting on themselves, but that's something that will take time.
