Lady Griz

Time to watch future GRIZ, Will Cherry in the CA State Championship game. Thanks for the great years, Mandy, Sonya, Britney, and Tam. I wish all you the best. May your kids become future all americans and become a LG, unlike a recent HS all american. (Good luck to JOS too!)

anything under a 40-point margin is a moral victory....GO LADY GRIZ!

I am curious...is there a reason that a program like Montana should be competitive with a program like Pittsburgh?

I'm embarrased for them. Tied the record for least points scored in a half (10) in the NCAA tournament...ever.

Wow. I am not sure that I have ever seen a game like this. If you count the last two minutes of the first half, the lady griz have scored 12 points. I can now see why it was that we didn't get much respect from the ranking comittee. We haven't won a game in a decade, and recently the games haven't been close.

I thought we had a legitimate chance, but when you shoot around 10% and both mandy and sonya lay eggs in the second half, i am not sure there is much chance we have. This one hurts.

Surprisingly enough, I thought the biggest difference was our lack of a true ballhandler. We defended them in the paint much better than I thought we would. They (Zellous) killed the LG from stop and pop perimeter shots. Pitt is a very good perimeter shooting team for being so big and athletic.

Mandy did have 8 assists, which is surprising.

I agree...what bothers me, is that the Lady Griz still had time outs at the end of the first half, and at the end of the game.....and not a lot of fouls....the rhythm of this game was broken about 2 minutes before the end of the first half....why? I suspect this game has done more to hurt UM basketball than help.....I hope not, but how do you explain a meltdown , a record in the NCAA tournament, from top to bottom, to an out of state recruit? The good news is, they will all graduate and remain the great women they are...I have to tell myself, it's only a game....Now, about those bonuses and buyouts.....

It's almost like the LG looked at one another at halftime and said "What the hell are we doing here?" And had no answer. They wasted more than half of the 10 second clock with dumb passes just to cross mid court and frankly just never gave the Pitt ladies anything requiring much defence. The ball never moved around with enough crispness to give much of anybody a good shot. Others have addressed the abysmal shooting and shot selction. Pitt: Too physical. Too talented.

Couldn't we be happy just to win this lame ass BSC conference tournament then beg the Bobcats to go in our place and save GrizNation another huge - but predictable - embarrassment? ....Vanderbilt and now Pitt. I'll pass on a trifecta thank you. It's a tough way for our seniors to go out.

The Ladies did a good job breaking that trap once, and it was Shaunte at the end of the first half when they needed to get a shot off in the last few seconds. She broke right through the middle of it. Other than that one, they pussy-footed around it too much.

Well spoken. Embarrased? I bet you never played. Past 5th grade. :) :) ;)

The LG are great, just shy a few pieces. We love them, and respect them. Shannon Cate was the greatest LG player I ever saw. Imagine if I could change time and adjust the LG roster and put Mandy Morales on the same court with Shannon Cate, and pick another all-time great. We could compete.

I have no idea what you meant by that lame comment, but yes, watching them score 10 points in the second half was a bit embarrassing. I hated to see our great seniors go out like that.

Why is it so difficult for people to realize that the Big Sky is a second rate conference and even by dominating it, the Lady Griz are a second rate team when compared to the teams from the ACC, Big East, etc. The same is evident for mens basketball. When UM remains in a conference that has a second rate commissioner in charge, that makes horrible decisions, I say take the good but quit bitching about how every Big Sky basketball team, men's or women's, gets thumped on a regular basis in the tourney.

How big would've been having an offensive threat like a Jos Tinkle in the paint in this game? Prob. wouldn't have had such a long dry spell.

Having Tinkle wouldn't have made a difference, not at all. The LG were never going to be able to STOP Zellous; they did a great job of keeping the tempo slow in the first half, but still you cannot let a player like Zellous get 13 shots (!) just in the first half. Minus the girls from Maryland, the only other player the LG saw like that this year was Claire Faucher, who even she couldn't hold a candle to Zellous.

But with that said, the awful second half aside, this is a year to be proud of. Yes it's a terrible way for our seniors to go out and it's hard to imagine a team with Mandy and Sonya not going further, but they had a great season regardless of how it ended. Coach Selvig does a great job of getting most of the local talent or regional girls to come over and become members of the LG. Would it help if maybe he was able to snatch away a Pac-10 or Big East talent over to the LG? Of course, but look at SDSU, only about three girls are not from South Dakota and last I checked, SD is not a state known for amazing basketball.

Our girls will always be a force in the Big Sky. As for the national stage, it's our conference schedule which hurts us the most. Playing teams like Maryland, Gonzaga and SDSU doesn't help nearly as much in the opening weeks of the season, as it would near the end.

Maybe you can create a board game featuring Mandy and the Shannon Cates of two decades ago. Fun maybe, but try dealing in the here and now which is what Robin and LG fans are going to have to deal with. BTW, with all due repect to Shannon, it's a different game than it was back in 1990. Dream on...

You are preaching to an ever growing choir.

I am going to try to make this simple for you Tipper.

Childhood friends of mine were extremely successful in school and able to attend Stanford, Cornell, Princeton and other prestigious schools. My friends could have said "no" to the academic scholarships to Stanford, Cornell, etc. to stay in Montana.

My point about Mandy and Shannon was that they chose to attend college in Missoula despite having options to go elsewhere. We were lucky that they stayed and played for the Lady Griz.

Understand?

Again, basic for you Tipper. Robin Selvig recruits the best kids he can get. Same with our other HC's. Unless you have evidence otherwise, our UM head coaches are recruiting the best players available. Give me specific evidence that Bo turns down a great 6'2" inner-city kid with great scholastic habits/grades in lieu of a marginal 5'7" montana girl.
