lady griz?

over on bobcat nation they're debating the name of their women's team--"lady bobcats" v. "bobcats." apparently their ex-coach potera dropped "lady" in favor of straight "bobcats," and in defending that position, old friend bac properly points out that women are athletes just as are the men, whom we would never refer to as "gentlemen," so why refer to the women as "ladies?"

good point, further re-inforced by the fact the women have more than vanquished the old "throws like a girl" barb. they can shoot threes and free throws with the best of the men, throw look-away passes and even have begun to dunk with much more frequency. anybody who still doesn't think these women are superb athletes has probably never confronted one on the basketball court.

but i would make the opposite case, that unlike montana state our "lady griz" have built an incredible reputation and tradition on that name, and there'd be howls aplenty if some authority said we had to drop it a la "redskins." after all, the women have earned the right to be called whatever they choose.

like you said city they have earned the right to be called whatever THEY want. i think in this case you should put the ladies of the program to a vote and see what they decide.

I think that that has been done already.

and i assume they went with Lady Griz right, just a guess

As crappy as that cat team is the name should be the least of their worries. The LADY GRIZ have an indetity, and choose to be called what they are. the kitties ought to be more worried about their 20 plus loss season they have going.

It would be much less of an issue if they would just rename them the "Montana State Sex Kittens".

Well, most of them are kind of cute... :silly: Especially one of them, but I won't mention names here.

The Lady Griz have quite a reputation as the Lady Griz and if they don't want to change it, that's fine. I understand that they also have a separate logo. I don't mind the idea of having all of MSU's teams known as the Bobcats. I use Lady Cats in discussion so people know what I'm talking about.

On another note, they realize how bad their season has been. They know they'll lose more than 20, but any Bobcat fan who has watched this team is certainly proud of their efforts. These girls play as a team and they play hard. I can only say that there is a very bright future to this team and I'm looking forward to seeing what the coming years have in store for Montana State women's basketball. Sometimes you have to tear out the foundation before you can rebuild the house.

As already stated, the title "Lady Griz" carries a great deal of cache'. But I do agree that when they're playing, they're just the Griz to me. Still, changing the name would be a huge mistake.

Besides, when did the term "ladies" become anything other than a term of respect?

That's true. So then, because the Lady Griz can't have their own section on the BB board, why is it that the advice is to assume the post is about the Men, unless it specifically states "Lady" Griz? Grrr! An old pet peeve... It's frustrating to have to open every dang thread just to see if it maybe refers to the Ladies.
