Lady Griz vs. South Dakota

This will certainly be the biggest matchup at home on the nonconference schedule as USD is ranked 8th in the mid-major Top 25 poll and hold a 4-1 record. The Coyotes are a team that scores a lot of points (84.4 ppg) and will get after you defensively (they average 12.8 steals/game and on average score 26.8 ppg off of turnovers), so protecting the basketball will be key, and the team will have to be on their toes for 40 minutes.

Definitely going to be a contrast to the School Day game on Tuesday, where the team was firing on all cylinders after a 13-day layoff. Even without Madi Schoening (who missed her first career game on Tuesday) in the lineup, everyone picked up the slack in her absence...especially Carmen Gfeller and Gabi Harrington, who scored 15 and 13 points respectively off the bench. Four other players (McKenzie Johnston, Taylor Goligoski, Katie Mayhue, and Emma Stockholm) also scored double figures and Jordyn Schweyen was nearly the 7th Lady Griz to score double figures (had 9 points in 21 minutes) in the game against Providence (MT).

Ouch. Ladies down big at the half - 36-15. Only 15 points in a half is...not good. Can't tell what they're trying to do on offense. Lots of standing around or making just 1 cut and not really a lot of help to the ball when someone picks up the dribble. Lots of turnovers. It would look a lot worse if USD was hitting more of the wide open 3s they're getting. Have a lot of work to do to even make it respectable.

It really is amazing that the only offense that the LG has had over the past forty years or so has been either pass it around the perimeter, hopefully it might go in if one shoots the ball. Or, lop it over the defenders' head for a hopeful might make a layup but don't bother with the backboard sort of deal; either that or transition baskets which sometimes helps if one plays some defense.

When MSU beat the LG last year in Bozeman would one think to consider that when John Stockton was on the coaching staff there that he didn't deem it necessary to relay a few of the basic fundamentals such as the pick and roll?

Hate to admit it but perhaps one really needs to go back to school about all this stuff. Like if football; try the same play twice in a row and nine times out of ten you'll f**k up. Or maybe just fumble it away.

SD is good and way better than LG. SD is well-coached too. Play a physical and stifling D. Big, strong, tough, good position. Shot okay, but it's a good thing they weren't hot. Got lots of offensive rebounds. Had lots of steals.

LG scored 7, 8 and 11 in first 3 quarters. LG needs their injured players back, and even then .... LG has some young talent, but they also made a lot of young mistakes. Stiles was not in uniform, but ....

The Bodnar family was in attendance. Crowd of about 2700.

Any news if Gabi Harrington's injury (if there was one) is serious? Seemed like she was clutching her hand or forearm when she left the court (my view wasn't great) but saw her back on the bench in the 2nd half which was good. Heard also might just have been sickness?

Tough game for the LG. They had some opportunities early as South Dakota was missing a lot of wide open shots but couldn't get any offense going themselves. South Dakota reminds me of some of Selvig's teams (great strong, team defense where everybody communicates well and is in the right positions).

I don't really know what was wrong with the offense tonight. Early on it almost seemed like they were playing tight or lacking confidence. South Dakota did have a solid defense but outside of the high hedge (like the men do) and great help-side rotation, it wasn't necessarily high pressure like Sac State or others. Yet, there were just so many poor, ill-advised, sloppy passes from the LG. Too many times LG players picked up the ball before somebody was even open, like their only thought was "I need to get rid of this ball." Nobody was consistently looking to score except maybe Mayhue and to a lesser extent Henderson. Sometimes, I wish McKenzie would be more selfish offensively. She's got one of the best shots, a good handle, good body control, and can score through contact but doesn't necessarily look to take over.

It seems once again one of the main weaknesses of this team is the perimeter defense. I was glad when Shannon went to matchup instead of zone after halftime. It seemed to help even though South Dakota started to shoot better, most of the shots seemed more difficult. I think the ladies always play hard but it's almost like they don't understand the difference of being a half step quicker/earlier, etc when in zone. Maybe they need to watch Al Pacino's "We Fight For That Inch" speech in Any Given Sunday or read Sam Parker's 212 - The Extra Degree. Or maybe when watching film do a comparison with the men's tape. Point out that if Oguine or Moorehead get out of position and are rotating to the backside shooter just how much they sell out to adjust the shooter's shot. Even if they are in or near the key, do you rarely not see them go flying at the shooter, sometimes ending up in the stands. The last LG player that I can think of that would sell out and jump into the stands like that was McCalle Feller. Many times the LG players will be in the area, in position, but don't close out on the shooter. haha maybe they need a drill/reward when they intentionally foul the shooter in practice or something. The half-step quicker concept and mindset could help in a lot of areas like rebounding and cutting off drives, too.

I liked that Stockholm was being used more inside instead of just on the wing. She has improved her outside shooting (which last year had to have been in the mid twenties for season shooting percentage), but still has nice size and power that is a shame to waste by playing around the arc. She did have a tendency this game to get fouls down low, though.

Also, Goligoski seems to have improved her ball-handling and quickness while with the ball. That will really help when teams have to guard more than just her jump shot.

Not a real great outcome tonight but South Dakota is currently #8 in the mid-major poll. I think this team has the potential to be special and return to their dominating ways by next year if they can replace Jace. Hopefully, they get Madi, Stiles, and Harrington back soon for this year, though.

Harrington had the flu and played only a minute, according to the stats.

"Starting junior guard Madi Schoening was held out for the second straight game with a foot injury and redshirt sophomore guard Gabi Harrington, typically Montana's first player off the bench, was also sidelined Saturday.

"One thing our lack of depth hurt us with Gabi having the flu," Schweyen said. "We have no perimeter subs right now with Madi (Schoening) out and Sophie (Stiles) out and (Harrington) having the flu. Gabi has been a good spark for us."
