The Lady Griz hit 94% of their free throws, but the men only hit 57%? I just don't understand how teams are so ineffective at free throws.

94% from the free throw line is a complete rarity for the Lady Griz. Average for the season is 66.7% and Henderson is similar to Pridgett as she is a 52% free throw shooter and Pridgett is a 55.6% free throw shooter.

4 games in 8 days....Rest the legs and practice free throws! The most over-looked deficiency in men's college ball.

This has always been a huge mystery to me. Wilt Chamberlain, surely one of the top BBall players of all time, was terrible at the foul line. And Wilt was actually a damn good athlete. For him, I thought he was simply too strong to adopt a light enough touch for foul shooting. (For you young folks, Wilt's sheer physical strength was legendary.) But you see guys (and gals) who can shoot 40-50% from three-point range (often contested), and they can only manage maybe 60-65% uncontested from the free throw line. It's got to be mental ... and What do you do about that?

Jack Sikma (Seattel Sonics) once told me that the taller guys have a tougher time making free throws because of the trajectory. He said the basket looks closer than it is. Of course, what he didn't say and I didn't ask is how much practice does it take until the "trajectory" is second nature? There is a kid at Wofford this year that is Mr. Everything in the South. He can score with 4 guys in his face, sometimes 30 pts a game, but still makes 92.5 of his free throws. Wofford is ranked on top 25 with 1600 students.. just like Davidson a couple years ago...

Well, we’ll just wait until next year when the Griz are Big Sky Champs. Fat Bruno will be the Nostradamus of egriz and we will all look like a holes for being critical of the program. If it wasn’t for injuries - blah, blah, blah.

For me, FT's are more about being creatures of habit. I don't think FT shooting is native, but rather a peculiar action that is an oddity or outlier from how basketball is actually played.

I have always preferred to have players shoot FT's when they are tired and not as a static activity before or after practice. Prefer to stop practice at random points and have players shoot FT's with fatigue and stress. I have had players who without much effort could hit 80-90 out of a 100 in a relaxed situation, and be 50 or 60 percent shooters in games. I have no doubt the Oguine and Pridgett are probably the similar.

I prefer to have players get all the unneccessary movements out of their free throws, less legs, less arms and make it as simple as possible. Doesn't always work, because I have had teams who can't break 60% as a whole for seasons. Lost a game a few years back by five or six points, we went 14-34 from the FT line. Just like getting the yips with the putter. More about what is between the ears sometimes.

That's the other weird thing about free throw shooting. Equally talented guys, who put in lots of time practicing foul shots, can have dramatically different results under game conditions. If I had a good answer, I could maybe make a ton of money.

Of course, Rick Barry had/has an answer. But hardly anyone want to try it, probably because of the "image" problem. Years ago, I watched a video of Barry shooting blindfolded FT ... and it got to be boring. The human body is not a robot, so he didn't make every shot. But still -- according to the voice-over (they didn't show it totally live) -- he hit over 90% for like 15-20 minutes. From what I've read on SI.com, he stills shots that well -- blindfolded -- when asked.

Curios, what did you think about Jeff Hornacek's free throw routine?
