Lady Griz vs Cats

NCU wins over Griz - Smith earned this week's honor by setting the program's record for points in a game with 40 on Monday night against Montana. She finished the night shooting 54.5 percent (12-22) from the field and 43.8 (7-16) percent from behind the arc.

One player scores 40 and sets a school record. She is good obviously, but the scheme to shut her down was ineffective or it did not exist at all.

40 points by one player is pretty damn impressive. Savannah Smith truly is the best player in the league and shutting her down is a nearly impossible task, no matter how good you are. If UNC gets the Big Sky's bid at the big dance, what ever team that draws the Bears will have their hands full.

As for whether or not there's a "hot seat" in regards to Shannon Schweyen's status as head coach at UM, I'd say the seat is only getting hotter. She hasn't had a winning season in her three seasons as head coach (33-53 overall, 20-32 in Big Sky play, and 1-5 against the Cats as of this post) and I'd be quite surprised if she got a new contract after this season. When Selvig retired after the 2015-16 season, she was really the only person I could think of that would get consideration for the job and my hunch turned out to be right.

The way I see things, you gotta have at least ONE winning season over the course of your tenure if you want to stick around as head coach. But we as a forum are not the decision makers on this, it's UM's AD. And as much as I would hate to see Shannon not be retained after this season ends, I'd say UM has a tough decision to make.

Smith has been named Big Sky POW five times this year, including four of the last five weeks. I'm pretty sure you can email that scheme for shutting her down to every coach in the league...

You are correct, except she set a RECORD against the Griz. She is good, but damn it make someone else on the team beat you and there is no way she should have been allowed to take that many threes. Contested or not - she threw it up a ton from behind the line. They are not that good as an inside out team. Even if they were, then make them pound it low and beat you with their other threats. Come on, how many excuses can be used. Consistent expectations from all programs should be the expectation.

We lost this game and many others over the last three years because of coaching. How does the coach justify playing her own daughter over Sammy or Emma? Sammy is arguably the best player on the team. The lady Griz are the worst coached team in the big sky when it comes to fundamentals. Our point "Guard" dribbles with her eyes down and picks up her dribble way to early all the time. We have high turnovers and poor shooting. Fundamentals. We have some great talent and if we had a good coach, they would be better and contending for for wins. I hope that they do not renew her contract. The Lady Griz and the fans deserve a coach who can develop players and win championships. The head coach does not have what it takes to build a winning program.
