Lady Griz vs Bulldogs

The ladies are holding their own against the Gonzaga ladies. Start of the 4th ladies are down 6. Same old issue is rebounding on the defensive end. Too many second chance points for the Bulldogs.

Team and coach should quit reading their recruiting bios and buckle down on defensive end. Uncontested layup city.

OK showing. Defense still really needs some work. Gonzaga is really good. They’ve got four graduates and a senior in their starting lineup, all of which returned from a season ago. Tons of experience.

OregonStateFan is right, just an ok outing by the ladies. Marsten (?) needs to give up the ball sooner and not let the opposing team get set defensively. Gefeller was ineffective and looked lost most of the night. I thought I’d heard that she dropped some weight but didn’t appear so. I’ll let it go at that.
All in all hopefully they can build on their mistakes and do some damage in conference. I will say Danni Barts played very well and was the high scorer.
Take nothing away from Gonzaga, they are a very good women's basketball team.

Marten? Maybe you meant Gina Marxen. Marxen at least provided some offense coming off the bench.

Lady Griz played defense well for 1 1/2 quarters (second qtr and first half of third qtr). The rest was really poor defense.
If it weren't for Dani Bartsch, the game would have not looked close at all. 18 points and 10 rebounds. Don't think she had a rebound in the fourth quarter which hurt the Lady Griz as there weren't any other player able to rebound very well. Lady Griz lost the rebound battle 39 - 33. Kind of the difference in the game if you think the six extra rebounds turned into points for Gonzaga.

But, overall, It really wasn't that bad of a game as it certainly showed what the Lady Griz need to work on.

Konig, while being kind of very mediocre on defense, didn't turn the ball over at all in 25 minutes of play, with 4 assists. But, she allowed two players get around her and score which I was very surprised Holsinger didn't pull her out again since she was replaced a number of times before due to bad defense.

Fun game vs. a very good team. What I liked most is that coach Holsinger ran several different lineups. Nine players logged over 10 minutes. I got the impression he was saying, "Here you go... prove you belong on the floor by how you play right now."
I really like what MJ Bruno adds to this team.

I thought the second quarter, the Lady Griz really locked in on Defense and did a nice job, holding Gonzaga to 8 points (and really should have been only 6 if they executed on offense better as time was winding down). I wasn’t so sure Holsingers talk about how much they worked on defense held true when they allowed 24 points in the first quarter. Hopefully their “true talent” level is somewhere between (ideally holding teams to around 15 points per quarter).

TLDR, they’re probably not as bad as allowing 24 points in a quarter and they’re probably not as good as only allowing 8 points in a quarter.

I don't know why so much is expressed about defense as if that will solve all the LG problems of not winning any more. Granted, there is that old refrain that defense win championships. Then again, there are a number of individual players out there, at least on the national level that nobody can keep from scoring no matter what you do. I mean, if the LG can go ten to twelve deep, and talking about 'defense' and all that, why not do a full court press, then? Rotate the players every four to five minutes, rotate man-to-man, alternate every once in a while to zone, etc., etc., etc.
I don't know what's so wrong about emphasizing offense and just plain going out there and outscoring the other opponent.

Some time ago ( 4 or 5 years ago), Sac state tried to do that but failed.

Not trying to be flippant here, WyomingGrizFan, but the one person most publicly insisting upon measurable defensive improvement this year is coach Holsisnger himself. His 5 minute public address to fans after the GrizWBB scrimmage emphasized almost solely on how Montana must improve on D if it's to contend. Stats, I think, back him up. Statistically, Montana ranked in the lower third of the 2022-23 Big Sky Conf. in every defensive category, including rebounding.

Montana's "defensive failures" last night vs. a versatile Gonzaga squad were particularly glaring along the perimeter arc where GrizWBB players were not fighting over screens to challenge 3pt shooters. Then (late in the game) when they were fighting off screens, especially with perimeter D help, the Zags caught the Griz on several wide-open back-door low post bunnies. I personally think the loss to the Zags is the BEST first-game experience this team could have. This will provide a textbook video of what the team needs to correct defensively against a solid perimeter team like the Zags, like Washington State, like Eastern Washington and NAU etc. I personally agree with coach Holsinger: this team won't win the Big Sky without significant defensive improvement in all D areas and in rebounding.

While what Grizjournal is right about, If you read the game recap of the Lady Griz vs Bulldogs game on 406mtsports.com, per Holsinger, the biggest problem was communication. Some players thought they were supposed to be in zone while the others thought they were supposed to be in Man defense. This should, can be, and will likely be corrected by conference time.

As for going out there and trying to outscore the opponent, that is what the Lady Griz did last season. How did that work out. Averaged more points since 2006 and gave up more points since before Robin Selvig. One game and out.

Scoring is fun to watch from for fans but most coaches are wanting to play solid defense. Winning championships, cutting nets and earning rings requires emphasis on defense. I am sure Hollsinger puts lots of emphasis on both, but at some point the ball won't be dropping in a big game and a team will need to rely on there ability to create stops to create offense. Just an opinion....Schools like LMU back in the day did not care about defense, Grinnell a D3 school believes in OFF first....can't think of many successful D1 teams that have platooned subbed....not that it can't be successful, but coaches want stoppers. Lots of fans want to see deeper rotations to wear down the other team. But coaches are only going to play those they trust to execute the game plan. Just our 2 cents.

Does anyone have any info on Keeli Burton-Oliver? She was not suited up or on the bench last night.

Heard from a reliable source that Keeli Burton-Oliver is "most likely" no longer on the team. I know NO details though.

She was not even in the gym for the 2 Lady Griz games.
I'm going to LG Hoop Club dinner tonight. I hope to get the skinny on Keeli.

I asked Coach at the Hoop Club dinner. He said he couldn't say much because of privacy, but she has had a setback with her health. She has been undergoing tests and they should know more in a week or so.

Damn. I feel for the young lady. Hopefully if Keeli can't play anymore, she'll hang in there and finish out her degree at UM.
