Lady Griz/Vandy Game thread.

Oh, CpnAhab, "keeping it this close?" I'm looking at 22-51. Methinks you're the boy who opened up a bag of poop under the Xmas tree exclaiming joyfully "Oh boy, a pony that got away!"

Well you guys expected a win. I was happy they made the NCAA tournament. The guys didn't make the BSC tourney. I can see that it isn't close. At least I'm not calling for the coaches head and bashing the team. They are playing Vanderbilt for crying out loud.
 
The worst thing about winning the BSC is that you have to go off and have somebody rip away the pretense that we think we're really good. Sadly, as long as we plod along in the BSC we're about as good as we're ever going to get. If we moved up we'd probably get our brains beat out for a few years. Then when we got really sick of being a doormat we'd do something about it. For both the men and women, the BSC provides little incentive. It's our cozy little sandbox.
 
Selvig, Hauch and Tinkle have all tied-in emotionally with the UM fan base and boosters. No non-white coach could have survived their individual failings.

Let's bring in some coaches with dark skin and see how long they are allowed to be popular losers. I'd bet, around 2 seasons or less. But this will bring in the type of coaches that can recruit the type of players that are dominating at every level of sports.

34-62 sure doesn't souund like the ladies are with it even with Vandy being pretty darn good. That score just doesn't match our team. Wonder if they just got shell shocked or something, either that or relied on the 3 too much too early huh?

Quit recruiting 200 lb out of shape girls (there's 2 of them) and bring in some athletic african american girls.

Those are the kind of girls that play for the big schools in big conferences. Big Sky Conference has African-Americans but for the most part, aren't really that good. NAU may have the best African-American players, but even some of the White Vanderbilt players are better then they are.

Lady Griz signed Tiana Ware (she is African-American). She was worried about fitting in but after visiting decided she could. but, most of the African-Americans wouldn't even think about coming here, pretty much for the reason Ware said.


Now, maybe if Selvig hired Vicki Austin back in early '90s to be an assistant coach, it may have helped with recruiting African-Americans.

But, next year, Lady Griz will have an AFrican-American on the team, which may help recruit others.
 
Clearly, there needs to be a total reevaluation by Selvig regarding the kind of players he's recruiting. Basketball has some advantages over football in that area. You can bring in two or three real solid athletes who can carry the role player types that he usually brings in. Robin could do worse that to establish some contacts in the major metro areas of the country. We have nice kids when we need tough kids who can compete.
 
The LG, the men's BB team and the men's Football team all need a hard infusion of Ghetto Boy/Girl size, strength and talent. This observation is much less racist then the UM keeping, year after year, uncompetitive white coaches. Until we get coaches that are expecte to compete in the nation-wide recruiting game and are expected to win at the higher level, the Griz teams will continue to maybe, on a good year, "win the Sky". Yawn.

Let me be the first to say that the "Sky" is confirmed to be a noncompetitive bad joke on the NCAA athletic level. Maybe we can Ra Ra Win over an intermural team from the NCAA next year to get another 20 win season? Yawn. Its a bad joke. Everyone knows it except the sugarcoaters on egriz.

Well, watched the whole game and it's obvious that we were no match for Vandy. It's a bummer to see the season end this way, but I gotta give the ladies props for a very successful season and all of the fun memories.

Perhaps the most surprising thing of the night is reading this thread - some of the posters in it went from predicting a 4 point LG win to calling for Robin to be fired and saying this team needs "ghetto girls." Wow... I'm speechless seeing the fan base just flip a 180 in a few hours.

I think the only coach we've had year after year would be Selvig and it seems to me he does a pretty good job all things considered.
