LadyGriz Lady Griz v Cal Poly

Would like to go off on a rant but I'll calm down and just say, our defense needs a lot, and I mean A LOT of work. No wonder that NAIA school played us so close.

We can turn it over with the best of them too and we can’t make a shot either. Between defense, offense and turnovers we suck. Let’s hope for a lot of improvement in all areas in the second half.

Hasn’t really been good ever under BH

We lose by 10 to a not very good team. Lady Cats beat them by 20. Bad shooting night for sure, but we let them shoot everything uncontested. IMO, I think Waddington and Lincoln should be starting in place of Bruno and McCliment. If we can't fix our defense, it won't matter how much our shooting improves.

It looked like a Cal poly could not handle the GRIZ press. I think, that if the lady Griz had started to press earlier in the game, I think they could’ve come back and possibly won the game. Seemed like that press was the only good defense they had tonight.

Well, we just aren't a good team to start this year. Hopeful they can turn it around, but that game was pretty bad.

Cats won by 18, BUT that game was on a Tuesday at 11:00 for "Kids Day" (about 3,500 elementary and Middle school kids from Southwest Montana). So I can see why Cal Poly struggled on Tuesday. Cal Poly will also play Idaho, so we will see how they do there. They had 26 turnovers VS MSU (MSU Opponents are averaging 32 turnovers a game).

This was not a good show for the LG, fundamentals like turnovers and good D, along with very poor shooting, hope this game is one we'll never see again. Seems to be lots of potential for newer players this year, but the ball must go into the hoop, passes have to be snappy and direct, D--we can't permit drives in the paint, block outs/rebounding has to be deliberate. Where is the "Mack attack" so far this year? Zingaro looks quite frankly out of shape, fell over more than a few times, looks like she's trying though.

They have an undefeated Washington squad coming in on Sunday so whatever magic this coaching staff is going to work, they better get on it. The Dawgs are big and play fast. I don't expect us to win but do expect to see some improvement. Agree with MTbest, some demonstration of fundamentals would be a good place to start.

Well the one thing that's on our side is Washington does not have a lot of recent success against the Griz in anything lol

When it comes to Lady Griz basketball Lady Griz played Washington twice since 1989. Lost them both. Lady Griz lost the last 3 games against UW. Unless they recover their shooting ability, things could get very ugly very quickly Sunday.
Anyway, I am just hoping by conference play, they will be playing more consistently. Their defense wasn't great but it is better than the way they started last year and pretty much the entire season the year before. Maybe 3 years from now, the defense will be where we expect it to be. I think it may be just that there are so many new players to work into the system and it's just going to take awhile.
As for the comment about the Mack Attack. Konig has always started each year out slow, including her freshman year when she was awarded the freshman of the year award. Plus, she is likely going to be the player the opposing teams are going to focus on in defending the Lady Griz.
There's also the injuries. Bartsch can only play so much, Zingaro may look out of shape because she is recovering from injury.
Another thing, at this point, Lady Griz really do not have a go-to player. Last year, there was Gfeller, Marxen, and Espenmiller-Mcgraw. The loss of those 3 are huge.

I think at this stage all players want to win and are "trying" but it sure is noticeable the difference in both this game and the Gonzaga game when the LG got more aggressive from earlier in the game. In my mind, the trapping press wasn't only successful because Cal Poly couldn't handle it but more that it seemed to change the LG competitive mindset and triggered that fight or flight response. Later in the game, they were stepping to shooters better and with more of a sense of urgency and actually trying to bother and disrupt the opposing players/offense as opposed to just being in their spots and going though the motions earlier on D.

On Offense for LG it was the same deal early (lots of poor O from what seemed like "going through the motions"). The 3 player weave telegraphs too much and seems to result in too many turnovers as the ball handler goes to a side and if the wing is being played tightly the ball handler usually picks up their dribble or forces a short pass/hand-off that is fumbled away or just straight picked off (we don't seem to have that heady Stiles or Marxen type player yet that reads the defense anticipating the weave and just keeps it around the outside for a wide open layup). I would like to see more ball movement/rotation instead as especially the inside-out/drive-and-dish tends to lead to better opportunities for your shooters as well as tiring out the opposing defense. Again, Marxen was a great example of being composed and moving the entire defense with her shoulder fakes and then just popping a three or then finding the most open shooter now that the defense was scrambling.

I like Waddington's game and already she seems like our best all-around player. Offense, defense, rebounding, size, hustle, competitiveness. Not sure why you would take her off the floor but maybe it has something to do with adjusting to college conditioning but she seems fine.

Lincoln does have impressive moments on offense but still can have defensive issues/lapses and can have turnover issues sometimes (usually traveling or poor decisions with passes).

I like Bruno's scrappiness, rebounding, and defense. Her shooting and offensive aggressiveness can be good although we haven't seen much this year.

I haven't paid too much attention to McCliment-Call to have an opinion yet.

The ball dominance by Mack is killing any chance of long term success for the team, clearly obvious in the Minnesota game. Several offensive sets with not one pass. It’s going to be a long season if she is allowed to just focused on her stats and taking low percentage shots. There are much better scorers on this team and the ball should be in their hands.
