Lady Griz Rock!

i've praised selvig for recruiting native americans--and thank god he has. where would our team be this year without them?

i've never heard any player criticize selvig for anything but his driving, and that only out of pure stark terror.

i doubt robin selvig has a racist bone in his body.

all the more reason to be baffled for his recruiting black players like they were stephen colbert's black friend.

oh, yes, i forgot--it's the recruiting budget.

yet the lady griz have had numerous players from out of state--joy anderson (minnesota); crystal baird (california); angela bieber, cheryl brandell, annette whitaker, margaret williams, jamie fariss, and sheri thesenvitz (washington); laura valley, leah meier, jody mcleod, brooklyn lorenzen, julie deming and lauren cooper (oregon); kim venik and barb kavanaugh (colorado); stacy edwards and vicki austin--our only black player ever--(illinois.)

so how did these gals wind up in montana--they were itinerant cherry pickers working the east flathead? is it any farther to minnesota to get joy anderson than it was for tinks and krysko to get cameron rundles? any farther to recruit an angela bieber than it was for bobby hauck to recrit thomas brooks-fletcher?

i mean, can you imagine the uproar if our football team announced it would no longer recruit outside the state of montana? or our men's basektball team? can you imagine a big-time men's or women's coach anywhere in the country not recruiting black players?

ole citay go to nate thurmond's ribs joint for lunch about once every two weeks, and while he's waiting for his order, notices the chart on the wall with mug shots of the top 50 players the first 50 years of the n.b.a., and he can see, there ain't a helluva lot of white players on that list, but even at that, there's about six times as many as there are black players at montana during selvig's first 28 years at montana, and it always leaves po' citay scratchin' his head, that's all.

I am sure you could do so much better city. If you spent half the time coming up with something new to whine about instead of trying to post a cutesy post, we would all be better off. Have a Merry Christmas City, try following the WNBA subsidy league, you can see all the sistahs you want.

as another side note, turner-thorne is quite a coach too. now 8-1, ranked tenth in the country, only loss to tennessee. i can't imagine how much better they'd be with mandy.

course, turner-thorne not only recruits outside arizona, she's not averse to recruiting sistahs either, of which ohio state has ten on their current roster, while we've had one in 28 years under selvig.
imagine the consternation if tinks and hauck announced they were no longer recruiting brothers for their teams but instead concentrating mainly on in-state talent. why, the howls from the remaining 2231 fans in wash-griz would be deafening. or imagine a similar policy for the men's team at gonzaga, where the kennel would be reduced to a matchbox.

so let me take the suspense out of this year or any year for fans of the lady griz: we win the big sky--retaining our mantle as "big sky power"--then get beat by 40 in the first round of the ncaa tournament by a team** of incredulous sistahs who out quick-us, out-muslcle us and out-leap us, as ohio state did in columbus last month.

2004-05 vandy 67-44
2003-04 la tech 81-77
1999-00 georgia 74-46
1997-98 florida 85-64
1996-97 texas tech 47-45
1995-96 n.c. state 77-68
1994-95 purdue 62-51

our only ncaa victories came more than twelve years ago, before the big schools put money into their women's programs, and when the lady griz had one of the most phenomonal athletes ever to come out of the state of montana, shannon cate.

So this list contains la tech which was ranked in the top 5 I believe at the time, loss by 4. Texas Tech was also nationally ranked, lost by two. Those are two respectable scores. I can also bet that most teams in the country can not guard Mandy. Add some three point shooting from the other shooters and you could have a two win post season this year. Mandy is by far the best guard we have ever had at U of M and she is just starting. Be Patient!

I don't really know how Citygriz can be comparing griz football, mens basketball to our Lady Griz team. First of all, look at the percentage of african american athletes in the NFL, and NBA to the WNBA. Huge difference. Second, who is to say that Robin has not recruited african american players. It might be a smaller number, but when you have the ladies from Montana with their skills and try to fill other spots on the team there is not much room to spare. Those players from out of state come to Montana to want to play. I really don't think that Robin has to go looking all that hard for them. There is some serious biasness in Citys posts and I don't understand it. It is what it is. Robin will be probably the number 3 winningest coach of all time by doing what he has done. Don't try to make something out of it that it is not. Keep doing what you are doing Robin! I can see sweet sixteen, if not better when we can pull Hurley and Tinkle into our program. I honestly have not seen a better freshman girl basketball player than when I saw Hurley play in Frenchtown a couple of years ago, at which time she was attending Pat Summits camps in Tennessee. The only thing I did not like was the fact that her coach kept her playing to pad her stats when they were up by 40. It was ridiculous. We have a very bright future!

City, I actually think that there are very few blacks playing for any school in the Big Sky. I believe EWU has 2, Weber has 3, ISU has 0, I think MSU has 0, NAU has 4-5, Sac has around 4, UNC has 1, and PSU has 1. So as a conference has approximately 16 out of say 117 (9 x 13) student-athletes. Looks to me that Montana is not the only school that does not attract black players.

Texas Tech was also nationally ranked, lost by two.

Outside of the fact that the LG went ten minutes at least in the second half without scoring a point; having a basket made by Greta Koss taken away for a traveling violation that no one at the game saw, one step towards the basket when a player has the option of 1 & one half steps to take. That game should have went into overtime, even though Texas Tech lost their starting post player due to a broken ankle from a previous game.

If our players had no injuries during their playing careers the LG could very well of defeated USC back in 1992, the same USC that defeated S. F. Austin in the regionals & lost to eventual National Champion Stanford in the Regional Championships. All things considered equal the LG could very well have been in the Final Eight of the NCAA Tournament that year.

sooo... i'm guessing i should start to follow and cover lady griz hoops. It's not that I don't like the brand of hoops, I just went to a game last and the atmosphere was probably the worst i've ever seen at a basketball game. However, just another team for me to emotionally invest in far more than i should. (ah, josh swogger flashback)

Mandy Morales now tied for fourth in the nation in scoring average @ 22.3 points per game.

I knew that, but was trying not to jinx her or the Lady Griz. At least I cannot be blamed now. Thank you for taking that off me!! Good job LG and Mandy!!!

Mandy also is in Top 50 nationally in FT%, 3 PT %, assists.

Team ranks in top 50 in Scoring, Scoring margin, 3 pts made per game, 3 pt %, ft %. Just out of top 50 in FG% defense and Assists per game.

Very impressive!!! Great job ladies and Robin, you do ROCK!!!!

but was trying not to jinx

I don't think we have to worry about that; it's very, very hard to confuse a Griz with a Bobcat. Besides, that could serve as a new mascot for MSU, like in the 'California Jinx,' which rhymes with 'lynx rufus,' a bobcat that is the smallest member of the lynx group. Other than the 'felis rufus' also by the way.

Selvig is not happy with that FG% D. The LG have led the nation in D before.

Well, at least the LG beat a pretty good team in Cal St-Northridge, evidently, even though they are now 3 - 9; after losing 17 Dec 06 to the LGriz the Matadors took # 20 Michigan St. to overtime before succumbing 73 - 69 on 22 Dec 06. That's the Spartans with their 6' 9" freshman phenom Allyssa DeHaan that's second on the team @ scoring @ 13.4 points a game, averaging 9.1 rebounds & has already 51 blocks in 11 games; also a very good free throw shooter @ 76.7 %. A game effort by the ex-BSC Matadors.

By way of comparison, here's Ohio State's roster. Every player except the UCLA transfer is from Ohio, Michigan, W. Virginia or Pensylvania. So even at a very top notch women's basketball program, with a coach who been successful nationally (he previously coached at Vandy), recruiting is pretty local. Except for UConn and Tennessee, I doubt that many women's programs really recruit nationally.

If that's the case for the top of the line programs in women's basketball, then Selvig will be pretty much limited to recruiting in his region. As an African-American friend of my family's once commented when he came out to Montana to visit us, "I'm pretty sure that I'm the only black guy around for 300 miles."

If the LG win the upcoming tournament against Canisius & the Idaho-Wyoming winner I sure do hope that Wyoming beats #22 New Mexico (10 - 2) come 04 January 2007 & go undefeated in their Mountain West Conference.

Keep in mind you have approximately 11,500,000 people in Ohio, while Montana has 900,000. I grew up in Montana, there was 1 black family in the 20 years I spent there.

Idaho State soccer player Lyndsey Gensler joins Bengal wbb; 2005-06 BSC Defensive Player of the Year Joanna Hixon to miss season due to illness.

article & video:

http://www.kidk.com/sports/local/4805496.html

Gensler adds some depth along the front line...and her outside shooting will hurt some teams on occasion, but the biggest thing for ISU is the loss of Hixon. Her rebounding, defense and the way she came on offensively at the end of last season leave big voids. Still...ISU will be right there battling for the league title...Newlee's teams are just that way...
