Lady Griz play their best game of the year in win over FSU

Lady Griz are looking good. Beat Florida State 60 - 49. They just may have found a point guard. No, not a black inner city point guard, but somebody who is a better than average ball handler. She really never was able to play a lot this year, but when Monaco went down with an injury, in stepped Michela Schmitz.

Michela played one heck of a game at point guard. 25 minutes played, turned the ball over only 2 times against very good pressure defense by Florida State. To top it off she hit two big 3 pointers.

Holly Tyler also had her best game as a Lady Griz. She had 27 points on 11 of 15 from the field and 5 of 7 from free throw line, in addition to 13 rebounds for the game. She was named MVP of the tournament.

Katie Edwards was the only other player in double figures with 10 points and was also named to the all-tournament team.

Lady Griz did shoot better today against a better defense. They shot 42.6% which is an improvement over yesterday. But, with the defense that Florida State put on, 42.6% was a very good percentage.

Lady Griz did turn it over 17 times, but only 5 times in the second half.

Montana's defense, especially its' zone defense, is getting so much better now. Held Florida State, who has been averaging over 70 points a game, under 50. The Seminoles shot only 33.3% from the field, and they turned it over 16 times.

Lady Griz outrebounded the Seminoles 39 to 27.

Now, it is off to Utah for the Lady Griz. Hopefully, they won't get blown out like they have been the past few times when playing Utah in Salt Lake City.

My thanks too! I had to go to "dinner out", and missed the game. I've been searching for info ever since I got home. ESPN didn't even have the game as being played!

Thanks again!

What was with the injury?

Monaco landed hard, and it seems to be a back injury. Not sure how bad it is though. Hate to see anybody injured, but I think Schmitz saved the day. Monaco had 5 turnovers against the much quicker Florida State players. This is really the first game where Schmitz had a chance to shine, and she took advantage of it. She played very confidently out there.

I took in the game with my family (first time in about 1.5 years) and was very impressed by the Lady Griz, Tyler especially.

Passing was suspect by both teams for a while in the 1st half with lots of turn overs.

I thought it looked like Monacos injury was a heel/ankle, but not sure.

Pretty good crowd for the game as well. Lots of fun, I'll be back for sure.

Said in the paper today it was a bruised back, she could've gone back but Selvig wouldn't risk it.

1st Lady Griz game I went to this year, and what a great game. If they could reduce the turnovers they could really come together in conference play. If you think the Lady Griz are missing Deming and Tyler this year, wait until next year when Tyler graduates...

On a side note, people need to learn "the rules" when leaving the parking lot. I know it's not really a rule but its polite to always let one car in.

Re/Max, I know the "rule" of which you speak ... but, it has been my experience that only Griz football fans observe that rule ... basketball fans seem to operate on an every-person-for-him/herself plan. It always takes us less time to get out of a football game than a basketball game -- and that is ridiculous when you consider the difference in numbers of those attending.

Perhaps there should be attendants helping the flow of traffic like at football games... I saw NONE at this game and to put it mildly, it was a cluster F*ck.

Where I park at Lady Griz and Griz games, it never is like the way GoodGodGriz describes it. But, since I do not want it to turn out that way, I guess I will say where that is in fear that it would turn out that way. In fact it is just the opposite when compared with football, which is why I walk home instead of drive, because it takes forever to leave the football stadium after a game. It is just a big cluster of cars trying to get out and it takes forever. After BB game, it just takes 2 or 3 minutes to drive home. People let me in, I let them in. Just great.

Have a happy new year.
