Lady Griz Maroon-Silver Scrimmage tonight

Men's had their scrimmage last night in front of 266 fans. Somebody must have counted them. I think it was the smallest turnout in years for a Men's Maroon-Silver scrimmage.

Tonight, Lady Griz scrimmage at 5:30PM prior to a volleyball game. Must have scheduled this scrimmage in hopes of increasing attendance for the volleyball game. But if Lady Griz BB team draws as many or fewer than the men's, then that may not work very well.

But, the Missoulian carried a larger article about the Lady Griz scrimmage than they did when they announced the men's scrimmage yesterday. The announcement for the men's scrimmage was more like a side note. Okay folks, there is a men's scrimmage tonight at 7:05PM. Very little else that was meaningful.

For the Lady Griz, at least the Missoulian provided some more info. Like Clossen playing in the post. Sonya Rogers and Mandy Morales are fighting for the point guard position. I'll certainly be watching to see how these players do tonight.

But, depending how attendance is tonight for Lady Griz BB scrimmage, could be related to how much media exposure the two teams have. Could be more Lady Griz fans, or maybe just not enough media exposure given to the fans for the men's BB team. Lord knows, it certainly couldn't be because the volleyball team helping out the attendance for the Lady Griz, if in fact it is higher tonight.

Sorry but I did not get to this site recently so I missed the mens scrimmage due to lak of publicity. My bad but it would have been nice to know about. Someone saw it on this site and some one saw it in the paper. I did not see it in the paper.

the info was a tiny little blurb on the second page of the sports section on the same day.

Not surprised you and many other fans missed it. As I say, only 266 fans for men's scrimmage, per thursday Missoulian.

It actually was in the Mens schedule that is posted on the www.montanagrizzlies.com web site. Not sure when they added it there.

There was more space in the Missoulian today announcing the Lady Griz Scrimmage. Plus, I knew about the Lady Griz scrimmage one or two weeks ago as that was in the schedule for quite a while. Did look like the Lady Griz had more fans in attendance in their scrimmage. Possibly up to 400 in attendance. Pretty good since it was during dinner time.

I say the attendance for both men's and women's scrimmages indicate how media affects both of them.

Anyway here is my thoughts on the Lady Griz Scimmage:

Silver, a team full of freshman and sophomores, beat the maroons, a team with all the upper class players, 77 - 75.

One thing that should be noted, nobody fouled out even though there were players with more than 5 fouls. Katie Edwards would have fouled out for the Maroons as she had 5 fouls but played to the end. Sonya Rogers also had 5 fouls and Tamara Jo Guardipee had 7 fouls. Rogers and Guardipee were on the silver team.

3 - Mandy Morales - scored 23 points, 4 assists, 1 turnover, 2 steals. She likely will be the starting point guard. Has good moves to the basket and can finish. Made 8 of 12 free throws. Like to see it better than that. Had a real nice steal and took down for a score.

5 - Johanna Clossen - Scored 6 points, 6 rebounds. Didn't look that great today. I do not think she belongs in the post position. Played mostly power forward though. I think she will pull through though.

10 - Sonya Rogers - Scored 11 points, 8 assists, 3 turnovers, 1 steal. Looked pretty good. Also had some good moves to the basket but seemed to be fouled every time she did. Shot 6 - 6 from free throw line. Mandy will likely start, but eventually later on in their careers here, I suspect Rogers will take over the point guard and Mandy move over to 2 or 3 guard. Mandy's experience practicing with the team and learning the zone defense makes the difference here, plus Mandy is an excellent scorer.

11 - Laura Cote - Scored 6 points. Hustler. Didn't shoot very well, 2 - 10. Will be coming off the bench.

12 - Katie Edwards - Scored 29 points - She can shoot the rock. I expect her to be the leading scorer for the Lady Griz. Lady Griz will likely depend a lot on her for scoring points.

14 - Jackie Deshazer - Scored 4 points, 1 steal - Still recovering from Knee problems. May not see a lot playing time because of it.

22 - Britney Lohman - Scored 15 points, 1 steal - Promising player. Can shoot the ball. Wonder if she will red shirt. Have plenty of depth in the position she plays, but she has played better than some of the more veteran players.

23 - Dana Conway - Scored 5 points, 1 steal - Good player, but really didn't do as well as she could.

32 - Sara Gale - Scored 7 points, 12 rebounds - did very off the boards, like to see more scoring from her. It may come as the season progresses.

33 - Jody Mcleod - Scored 7 points, 6 rebounds - Didn't have the best night scoring. She will have her good games and will likely be a starter.

40 - Betsy Snead - Scored 4 points, 4 reboounds - Will be redshirting due to transfer rules.

45 - Lauren Beck - Scored 9 points, 8 rebounds - Can shoot a three, made two of them. Did well rebounding on the defensive end. I suspect she may redshirt.

51 - Tamara Jo Guardipee - Scored 26 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 0 turnovers, 2 block shots - Could she be the next Holly Tyler? Maybe, but it will be unlikely she will shoot the three like Holly. Plus, committing 7 fouls, she will need to work on not commiting fouls, and on defense. May have problems keeping her in game if she doesn't reduce her fouls.

54 - Shadra Robison - Scored 0 points, 6 rebounds - Could be a good rebounder but was only able to get off one shot in her 17 minutes of play time and missed it. Likely to redshirt.

Overall:
My starting team, would be this:

pg - Mandy
2 g - Katie
f - Clossen
pf - Jody Mcleod
C - Oh what the heck, Guardipee.
