Lady Griz Looked Terrific Tonight

The Lady Griz played very well and clobbered Weber tonight. Ran away with it. Almost start to finish. Stauadacher started and played well. Think 4 frosh started. Sierra Anderson came off the bench and played well. Schoening was high.

The LG almost doubled up on rebounds, until later in the game. Shot about 80% from the line. Shot well from field. Hustled. Dove for balls. Passed very well. Defended well.

Finally, a great performance for the bulk of the game. Very good crowd. About 3300 in attendance. The Red Wave band, middle school, performed at halftime. They were great. Always are.

LG will be the 11th seed in the tourney. Former Lady Griz Krista Redpath will do the color for all of the games in Reno.

That's great! They've had stretches that looks like they've played well. Think they'll be a tough 11 seed, hopefully propelling them to a 1 next year!

2017-18 is gonna be "Lady Griz Revenge Tour"!

It's been encouraging to see the team's confidence growing as the young players understand the schemes on defense (hedging & switching) and offense (timing and running all the options). But there were several other factors last night that fell into place:

1. The comfortable lead was maintained by reserves, who did not allow any let-down. Ten players logged double-digit minutes and all 10 scored.
2. You could see the game slow down for these kids last night. They rarely put up rushed, wild shots. As a result, the final step-through reverse pivot shots were often open & rarely contested.
3. Sierra Anderson played an inspired game against a very good defender (I think it was Kallie Quinn); perhaps the best I've seen her play. Important, because it allowed coach S. to rest Mckenzie Johnston, who took a beating from the Bobcats last Saturday.
4. Weber was pretty physical in the paint, but it was encouraging to watch true frosh Emma Stockholm and Hailey Nicholson stand tough. Stockholm showed some great offensive pivot moves in the key as well.
5. Growing confidence by frosh Madi Schoening. Her left-lane drives kept the Cats on their heels; when they played off of her, she knocked down two treys.
6. But possibly the most encouraging to me was to see the leadership of Rachel Staudacher and Mekayla Isaak. Staudacher played an incredible defensive game (three blocks), while Isaak had (in my opinion) her best game of the year. Outstanding D as usual, but she dished 5 assists on the complex Griz paint screen/reverse... and on kicks to an open Schoening. And then her shots started to fall: 4-for-4 last night.
Friday's game against ISU may well be a preview of their first tourney game (Montana will play either ISU or Idaho). The Bobcats beat ISU by six last night. It'll be fun to see how the Lady Griz finish out their regular season.

Nice report and info, Journal. I say the Griz win the next game. The confidence level has really gone up.

Once again nice write up GrizJ, always nail it. Just another GRIZ BB team that I can't wait for next year and what about the years after that!

Not sure if we want to be telling everybody that one of our players was high?!?!

It is very impressive how these women have grown as a team. Earlier in the year I wasn't sure if they would win one conference game. They are very fun to watch and the future is bright. Might be "scary good" next year with all the returning talent, including injured players. Props to the players and the coaching staff!

Just a terrific performance by the LG Wednesday night. The girls showed a LOT of character and heart ESPECIALLY given all the adversity and struggles they have dealt with this season. Props to the players, coaches, and all the staff! :thumb: :D

Montana LG first-half defense was some of the most dominating clamp-down D I've ever seen a Lady Griz squad employ. After giving up three early drives, Montana shut the door. Held ISU to 19 points in the first half. Nine Montana steals and constant pressure led to 19 ISU turnovers... four blocks in the paint. Lady Griz held ISU to 33% shooting and contested nearly every shot. Rachel Staudacher and Mekayla Isaak w/very effective D in the paint. Overall superb defensive outing.

Second half not as dominant, but the steady 10-point margin seemed very secure throughout. McKenzie Johnston turning into a classic Montana "in-control" point guard, equally lethal with the pull-up jumper or quick right... and left lane drives.

It'll be a tough one on Monday, in a re-match against these same Bengals, who looked embarrassed & probably have some motivation for revenge. It'll be tough, but if they continue to play defense like they did tonight, I think Montana can do a repeat of tonight's win.

4. Weber was pretty physical in the paint,

I caught the end of the state of Washington girls 4A basketball championship game on TV last night, and the one of the players is going to Weber State next year... she is as big as a house, I suspect their physical play in the paint will continue.

I've been watching highlights from the Grizzly Sports Report on TV every week... the girls team has improved, as one would suspect. I really like the head coach... I see good things going forward. I predicted Rs-Fr Taylor G (Hamilton) would be a player, glad to see her doing well. Course doesn't take a genius to know that a two-time Montana Gatorade Basketball Player of the Year (and All-State softball player -- could have chosen that sport in college) would shine.
