Lady Griz Injuries

From Coach at Hoop Club:

Imogen blew her knee in practice. Will have surgery and out for the season.

Draya and Coach made the decision that she is just not ready to go yet. She needs to get stronger. She had a medical redshirt last year and will take a regular redshirt this season.

Keeli's health remains a question mark. No new updates. (She has not been at any of the games so far, not even on the bench, not even in street clothes)

And, of course we knew that Macy Donarski had knee surgery and is out for the season.

Thanks for the updates. Macy and Draya will essentially become members of the 2024 class - which should help with some balance.

Bummer on Imogen. I find the Keeli Burton-Oliver situation interesting.

Is this accurate?

Stump, out with torn ACL
Marxen, ankle (short term injury)
Burton Oliver = health issues
Donarski = torn ACL
Wacker = not recovered from ACL, redshirting
Greenslade = torn ACL

When you figure Dick probably won't see much, if any, playing time, That gives us a 9 person roster.

Thats pretty brutal.

Lady Griz seem to have an abnormal amount of knee and torn ACL - going back the last few years. Why is that? Seems unlikely it’s just coincidence or bad luck.

The ACL thing isn't new in women's college hoops. Higher incidence by a long shot than mens hoops players. Purely physio quirk of the womans body (alignment of the knees-hips-ankles) leads to increased pressure on knee joint.

Some of it is purely bad luck when it comes to ACL injuries. There is an increased push from Kinesiologists and orthopedists to recommend knee braces to help stabilize the knee much like most college FB programs requiring OL to wear braces. Moreover, there is growing amounts of data that lifting programs can add to that risk. The imbalance in the strength between the upper leg primary muscles is seen as an increased risk factor (over developed quads vs less strong or flexible hamstrings) as well as under-developed calf and ankle muscles can contribute as well. Targeted and focused lifting programs that look at comprehensive leg strength development that focuses on muscle balance and flexibility are becoming more and more popular.

Even when my daughter was in gymnastics, there were a lot of knee/tendon issues (this is back when she was about 10 years old). The local gym started having some warmup exercises that would help strengthen it, but I can't remember what they did. It sounds like preventative exercises need to be a daily routine for women athletes in general.

Listening to some of the PT guys over the years, have said there is only so much stretching and strength training you can do to support the knee. Most of it is related to alignment, and where the force is imparted. Basketball because of the movements particularly the hard stops/plants, and how force is imparted on the knee in multiple directions, is about a cumulative impact on the strength of the ACL. To some degree it is like the UCL in elbows of pitchers. Once it is frayed or weakened it is a matter of time before it snaps. The elbow, like the knee is not meant to an accumulator and absorber of force but be able to kinetically move it up or down the limb.

Another aspect it seems like Holsinger is giving a 2nd chance and getting a lot of ladies with previous injury issues. I remember that sticking out when reading the Orientation stories. "Knock on wood" but MJ wears a back brace or heating pad on the bench most games. Maggie and Greenslade had injuries before transferring to UM. I think there was something about Donarski and injury in high school.

Coach confirmed at Hoop Club tonight: Libby is an ACL, Gina a sprained ankle--she ran and cut on it today at practice.

Doesn't seem like Macy Donarski missed any games over whatever supposed injuries that were supposedly incurred during her high school career.

I read somewhere that ACL injuries are unique to females in America because of training. I can't remember if it was over or under training.
