Thats a coaching issue...
Why is it a coaching issue? It sounds like a star player took over in clutch time.
Freije took over in overtime, scoring 10 of her game-high 27 points during bonus time to lift Montana State to a hard-fought 66-61 victory in front of 3,617. In overtime, Freije converted her first of four field goals in exactly one second of action. The teams traded buckets in a torrid first few minutes after a largely offensively absent second half. MSU senior Oliana Squires, who missed 10 of her first 11 field goal attempts, including all five from beyond the arc, swished a 3-pointer with 4:10 left in OT to put MSU up 56-53, the largest lead for the Bobcats since 5-2 early in the game. Johnston’s put-back with 2:28 remaining game Montana its second-to-last lead, 59-58. Madi Schoening’s layup with 1:40 left gave Montana’s last advantage. But the Bobcats went back to Freije again. She converted through contact to answer both buckets, then hit a pull-up jumper in Johnston’s face from the left elbow to give MSU the lead for good, 62-61 with 32 seconds left.

Because Shannon subbed out the 5 players who built a 14 point lead late in the 3rd. Then she completely went into the equivalent of a prevent in football but on the offensive end. Stopped attacking rim, changed their offense, and slowed it down all while watching her team slowly let it all slip away. It wasn’t all coaching as someone needs to hit big shots in that situation, but the coaching wasn’t great.

I am not trying to be a smart ass but who were the 5 players Shannon subbed out who in your opinion built the 14 point lead? If she subbed them all out at the same time we would have been playing with 4 players as only 9 players participated in the game. Another fact is the bench only scored 15 total points. In my opinion, and I am not a coach, I did think that Goligoski and Pickens should have played more in the 4th when we couldn't score but then again Taylor only took 2 shots the whole game and that isn't showing a lot of offensive aggression. Secondly, Abby Anderson missed her share of easy shots and I felt like she should start passing more as she is a good passer instead of shooting. Lastly between Abby, Emma and Sophia we were 4 of 27 and shooing less than 15% is not going to get it done. Defensively I thought it was our best effort of the year and right up there with the Idaho and Portland State games.

Like I keep saying...Shannon can't coach her way out of a paper bag. Bye Bye Shannon!!!

The coach situation is complex, and should be assessed objectively--as is a normal course of action. But, the complexity is likely this for UM/Haslem: Shannon is more or less a legacy coach (former top player-hall of famer, primary long term assistant under Selvig). An action of removal might have bad results--plenty of pushback in the "community". Her husband happens to be the Head track coach, her daughters are both players on the squad. The administration is least likely to touch any removal option. Can you imagine Haslem answering to fiery "community" feedback, to include the press? Or awkwardness of an ordinary meeting with head coaches, Mr. Schweyen...I know I fired your wife but...

I don't think there would be that kind of reaction. And this would have to be weighed against the feedback Haslam has been getting the last couple years.

I dont recall the 4th quarter subbing nor more than one shot clock violation. That occurred when an Anderson lay in attempt failed to even draw iron. Lady griz rebounded but clock expired. Some tough msu defense but more accurately some of the poorest shooting from point blank range I've ever seen. A tip..... when using the backboard on lay ins dont do so from the baseline. Stay in front of the hoop and let the backboard make the shot super easy. Lady Griz turn them into super tough shots that remind me of tough cut shots in pool. USE THE BACKBOARD AND SHOOT FROM IN FRONT OF THE BASKET!!

I agree the 5 on the floor for most of 4th had me wondering. One senior starter (not Johnson) missed everything she tried after a good start and was beaten on numerous hustle plays and rebounds the entire 4th quarter. Dont believe she was ever subbed out.

Totally agree, PR. We sit mid-court E Level A. A section full of long-term GSA. Most of us have season tickets to both Men's and Ladies. I would be surprised, from the rumblings I hear, that anyone near us isn't expecting this will be Shannon's last year. This is what I hear around Missoula as well. In fact, many would be very unhappy if she is retained. That 1-year extension was a kiss-of-death and quite likely a hint of the future.
Also note the section directly behind the home bench, where many left early in disgust in the middle of the recent home ISU melt-down.
Remember that for decades the Lady Griz dominated the Conference. They didn't win it every year, but were always the team to beat. They dominated MSU. Neither of those are even on the horizon. But the expectation of that domination is still there, because of program history, reputation, and huge fan attendance and loyalty. Lady Griz fans expect to be in the hunt for the conference championship EVERY year. And they also expect to beat MSU, if not every time, but the majority of times. Right now, MSU is the dominant in-State program and, looking at who they will have returning next year plus an outstanding recruiting class, this will continue in the future.
