LadyGriz Lady Griz down 22 and it's still the first half; I thought Holsinger was a good recruiter

But, would it take Payne as long to rebuild the Lady Griz as it took her to build NAU? I don't think so. We have the transfer portal, can rebuild a whole team in one season if you do it right. Sac State went from near the bottom of the league to near the top in one season with the help of the portal. Then went all the way back to the bottom again after the coach that UM actually considered over Holsinger left.

Is the current Lady Griz as bad as NAU was when she took over in 2017? I am assuming 2017-18 season being her first season. Hard to determine this but NAU was close to last place in the league during Payne's first season. Lady Griz are about the same position now as they were in that season. So, I would say Lady Griz now are better than NAU was in 2017-18 season.

Lady Griz do have something that NAU didn't have back in 2017-18 season. A player like Waddington to build around. Lady Griz may have sucked against MSU saturday, but Waddington has averaged over 20 points against them.

Plus, building a team in an environment like Dahlberg arena with around 2000+ fans has got to be an advantage over playing in an empty arena in Flagstaff.
 
Good point re:transfer portal building. Also a pretty big assumption that Waddington or any of the current players decide to stay. I assume some will. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if most stay or most leave depending on how much of the current staff stays/goes.
 
I think it’ll also be interesting how the new coaching staff will recruit. Holsinger repeatedly said that he took pride in defense but really the only defensive minded recruit he signed was Bruno and she was from the portal. TMC can play okay D but is definitely more of an offensive player.

Will the philosophy change from seemingly offense first to more balanced or even defense first?

The other assistant was an Oregon assistant. Not OSU. But yes we too heard wife didn't want to live in Missoula.

Speaking of the other OSU assistant. Jonas (was at OSU a ling time with Holsinger) is his first name. Now assistant at Okla. Heard his name is in the mix for the U San Diego job that is opening.

Also hearing PSU staff should be good for another due to PSU not wanting to do buyout.

Heard a few times last week that Mizzou is going to dismiss their staff and Molly Miller from GCU is the replacement. Which then leaves GCU for Payne to move too. GCU is moving to to MWC next yr. Originally moving to WCC. Hawaii and Davis are moving to MWC as well.

Tis the season for dismissals, departures and replacements. Will be interesting to follow the Big Sky, Big West, WCC and MWC conference coaching moves this spring.

A little too early to tell as Pepperdine is just 8-19 so far in her first year as head coach. Granted they are apart of the tougher WCC and were 5-25 last year before Faulkner and Tinkle arrived.
 
Seems the list of prospective coaches should go further than a few ex Lady Griz players now coaching or a couple all time Montana HS players now coaching. Katie Baker, Jocelyn Tinkle.....really?? How about Mandy Morales from Huntley Project?

Morales is no longer the head girls basketball coach at Huntley Project. She parted ways with them before the start of the high school basketball season.
