With the season most likely coming to an end on Monday, I figured it'd be good to have a thread to post any and all rumored names and candidates. I'm sure we won't start hearing names until next week, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's already a candidate or two. While IDK of any candidates or anyone's interest level in the job, I'm just gonna throw out my top name for the job: Loree Payne.

If anyone has names, feel free to post them here!

Kari Pickens. Current coach at D2 Ashland University. Not sure we could ever lure her and her family to Missoula, but I believe she's a winner and her teams play great D.

Damn, that would be interesting. She's been there 12 years, has won a national championship, is the winningest NCAA Women's Basketball coach of all time with a .911 winning percentage. The 22-23 season, they went 37-0 and won the D2 national championship. Looks like she played for them for 2 years before transferring to Dayton for 2 years. She's an Ohio girl and has spent her entire life in the state. Still relatively young in her mid 30s too. My only concern is she appears to have no west coast ties at all, but who cares when you can win at that high of a level. She could figure it out. She also may be waiting for a D1 job in the state/area. Perhaps if Dayton were to open up or one of those MAC schools or something. No idea if she'd wanna completely uproot her life to Montana, but if I'm Haslam I think this is worth a call.

I'm gonna pass on him as head coach but I definitely think he should be on the coaching staff next year.
Don't pass on Wooley--he's won an NC at Western in Montana as a head coach, not an assistant !!!

First, let me grab my old helmet and flack jacket and put them on... He'll yeah, Shannon, apply for your old job, you go. girl !!! Make Billings proud. again !!!

And Jordan Sullivan has some pretty good coaching genes as well !!!

Macintyre (Sullivan) and Tinkle are our two favorites. Katie Faulkner we heard was contacted by Haslam but the Pepperdine buyout we heard is 800k.

Sullivan has the yrs, experience and has some pretty solid connections to the program.
I was wondering what Faulkner's buyout was. 2 questions for you: First, are Faulkner and Macintyre interested in the job? If UM could find the money to buyout Faulkner, and second is Macintyre ready to be a head coach do you think?

Katie (with Tinkle's assistance) has not done well enough at Pepperdine (10-21) to get me excited. I'll go with Jordan Sullivan. But, unless some "oh, wow!!" coach surfaces, I'm not opposed to giving the job to Nate. He is a great guy, and the recruits and players love him. And he is a Ronan boy. We risk losing current players and recruits if he leaves.

It depends on whether MacIntyre has interest in the job or not. I'd have no objection to her being the head coach of the Lady Griz if she were to accept the role but again, it all depends on whether she's ready to be a head coach.

I saw a D2 name thrown into the hat in Kari Pickens (Ashland) but I wonder if Ryan McCarthy (Alaska Anchorage) would consider coming to Montana. He's gone 25-4 so far this season and defensively, his team has surrendered 50.1 ppg. His total record at UAA is 305-66 and he has been highly successful at UAA, but I could imagine it would be tough for him to leave Anchorage for Missoula.

Mandi Carver (associate HC at Fresno State) is a name that's worth a look. While not a former Lady Griz, she played in the Big Sky (at Idaho State) and is a Montana native (from Dillon). I think she applied for the job the last time it came open in 2021 but was never a finalist for it.

As much as I'd love to see Loree Payne come to Montana, she's got a damn good thing going at NAU and I honestly can't see her leaving Flagstaff, especially if the Lumberjacks end up winning the BSC tourney.

At the end of the day though, I'd still prefer to keep Nate and make him the permanent head coach. They've played better basketball since he took over in January and if the players and recruits love him, it just makes sense to keep him.

She may not have head coaching experience, but if you want someone with head coaching experience that would be from a lower level D2 or NAIA. Or an older former coach. Just our opinion.

That could be Harris (Lower Level HC) but if you look at his record at Angelo St it wouldn't get us excited to hire him.

Would be hard to imagine UM paying that money to buy out a HC that has only one yr under her belt. Pepperdine is a tough job and always has been. Let's see what she gets done in another 2 yrs. Next yrs recruiting class will be huge for her and Tinkle.

Lower level HC with experience and track record. Rachelle Sayers Carroll. RMAC, GSAC, Lone Star conferences could have an up and comer.

We still think MacInyre or Jos, but we could see Harris getting a chance considering the issues of the past. Hiring coaches and staff with housing costs in Missoula isnt easy from what we have seen. Same in Bozeman. Look at the fball coaching exodus over the yrs. Once they come they stay and leave asap. Housing!!! Makes a difference . Maybe Haslam just concedes and goes with Harris and the staff, but the best HC on that staff is Wooley. Just our 2 cents.

Kevin Woodin, HC of my other alma mater MSUB ( The "B" stands for Best) is in his 21st year here in Billings, he is the winningest coach in MSUB history with over 350 wins, he has led his girls to The Div. II Elite Eight, 2017-18, he graduates his girls and his teams routinely have a team GPA of 3.5 or higher, previous to MSUB he coached Billings West to back-to-back AA state championships in 2003-4, the impetus behind his hiring @ MSUB, and previous to that, he taught math and coached @ O' Dea HS in Seattle. He graduated from Carroll ( BA) and Seattle Pacific ( Master's Degree.)

Kevin is about 60 and is probably content to stay here in Billings, but he should at least be in the conversation because he's the most successful women's bball coach in Montana not named Binford !!!
