The Griz are vulnerable. McKenzie Johnston played 40 minutes today for a reason (only 3 turnovers) & when she handles the ball, Montana has been pretty stable. Two of Montana's best back-court ball handlers (Schoening & Stiles) are on the bench. A strategy Montana has been using (since midpoint last year) is to use Jace Henderson to take the ball up the floor, a strategy that works well in early O (she handles the ball well for a post & has excellent court vision). Montana's early O was why they got a 20-pt lead. The problems today came when SF changed their pressure late with jump traps all around the floor, and pounced on Jace in the back court.. & I think she panicked a bit.
Ok... she had 8 turnovers, but look at her game stats: She scored 18 pts on 8-for-11 fg shooting, had 10 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 blocks and 9 assists (one assist short of a triple double!). It's only a matter of time before K Mahue will be able to provide ball-handling assistance. Coach Schweyen said post-game that this kind of pressure is something Montana can't replicate in practice, and a good experience. But honestly, Montana might have to wait until next season to be able to withstand frantic pressure like they saw today.
