Lady Griz beat North Dakota

This was always a tough series for the Lady Griz, but it was only fitting it came down to the waning moments as Taylor Goligoski hit a jumper with 2.2 seconds left in regulation to win the game 53-51. I don't think you could have asked for a better ending to this series with UND as they move to the Summit League next season.

Though this win might have come at a price as freshman phenom Sophia Stiles went down with an apparent knee injury during the third quarter. She's had such a sensational season and it would be a shame if her injury was season-ending.

This is going to come off as sexist and it’s not mean to be, but what is the DEAL with all these knee injuries on the womens’ team? Is this some kind of physiological thing that womens’ knees aren’t suited well to this kind of activity? I’ve never seen a team so continually decimated by knee injuries...

I don't think its a gender thing necessarily its just plain bad luck. Lady Griz have had a bad rash of injuries compared to most teams in their conference.

Yes I believe there is a predisposition for women to have knee injuries. I am not a sports med doc and have not reviewed the literature. AZDOC may be able to shed some light here.

Bummer that Stiles got injured today..What bad luck for her and the Lady Griz..Also is Nora Klick out as well as I haven't seen her in the box scores for a couple of weeks..

A clutch pull-up jumper by Taylor Gologoski, with room-to-drive set up by McKenzie Johnston. Taylor, who was really hampered early in the year with a severe hamstring issue, is just now regaining her aggressive form. Great play on her part.
I saw a pretty emotional post-game interview with coach Schweyen regarding Stiles. No doubt a lot of concern on the part of the team. I'll add it to this post if I can locate it.

there is a correlative connection between hip-knee alignment in females and ACL tears. Been a good amount of research on it. There tends to be a muscle imbalance that tends to put more pressure on the knee that increases in/out ward of pressure versus absorbing of the stress in an upward/downward way.

Also is related to positioning of hip due to child bearing and the knee joint compartment is smaller than males. I coached varsity girls basketball for 34 years, I can attest to the number of knee injuries to my players, opponent players and female athletes in other sports. Unlike males whose injuries are mainly from collisions or severe torque, you will note than the majority of ACL injuries for females come when they are knocked/land off balance.
I am hoping that Sophia is going to be okay, but I will say the way she went down and her screaming in pain were all too familiar and left a sick feeling in my stomach.

Interesting to read your observation. I saw the play and noticed that there was no contact, just that Stiles came down awkwardly. Yet she was obviously in great pain as the players ran down to the other end of the floor. I wondered what the heck was wrong because there was no collision.

Hope it isn't too serious. She's a delight to watch.

Non-contact injuries that appear to cause pain out of proportion to mechanism are often bad. Such as significant ligamentous damage.
